Poison Chalice!!!

can you qualify that john. you mean he wanted to leave and really he was lying to everyone when he said he didn't want to?
No, he was fired. But he wasn't "shafted". The club took good care of him.

I think the impression that he was treated poorly comes from a couple of factors. His agent kept briefing the press against the club and creating this concept of the "Dead Man Walking", so there's a perception that a decision on replacing him was made long before the end of the season, which isn't true.

As a result, you had the emergence of this very sympathetic character in the media (Claudio is a nice guy, don't get me wrong, but he was practically sainted in the press in spring '04 and he intentionally played it that way). I think that gives the impression that he was "shafted" when it was just a regular change-of-manager situation.

When you get a team to the semi finals of the Champions League as The Tinker man did with Chelsea and bring in the quality players he did in my words he was shafted big time by the ruthless Russian Abramovich

Though some Chelsea fans admired Ranieri for battling on despite being doomed to be eventually sacked by the demanding owner, Roman Abramovich. It should also be noted in Ranieri's 4 seasons Chelsea gained more points than the previous every season. Chelsea favourites under Mourinho like John Terry, William Gallas, Claude Makelele, Frank Lampard, Petr Cech, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Arjen Robben were also brought to Chelsea or nurtured by Ranieri.

Jonny... suffice to say you have no idea. And that quote you've dredged up is utterly misinformed.

Despite what Claudio said at the press conferences, half those players were brought in by the agents that had Roman's ear, not the manager. Terry was a youth team product. And in terms of points, Chelsea set a record under Mourinho.

Yes, Claudio got the team to the semifinal. I was there (for the 2nd leg). It was very emotional. But Roman didn't decide to "sack" him until the season was over, not earlier as the press would have had you believe.

In short, he was not "shafted". (and Roman is not at all a ruthless guy, you muppet )

Yawn.... You're beginning to bore me already and the season hasn't started yet...

Jose is the better manager end of. Ranieri started it, Jose finished it.

As I said before, I'm glad he got it because I think he'll be really good for the premiership and Man City, as I used to love his post match interviews (hopefully he'll bring his translator back with him)...

Ditto that first sentence

I think the translator was the player liaison Gary and he's still with Chelsea so that won't work

Interesting quote from Ranieri's former team captain Marcel Desailly in today's Times:
Ranieri was a top coach, but the relationship with his players was not at the level Mourinho has with his players. They know he will kill them if they don’t perform, but they like him. They didn’t like Ranieri. When Mourinho shouts at them, they know it’s fair and there’s a good relationship. With Ranieri, the relationship was not good off the pitch.
“The players were not ready to fight for him, but they will for Mourinho as they love him. It makes a huge difference.

I see Owen Hargreaves has agreed to join Man United, he is a good player and should do well for United.

Reds agree Hargreaves deal

you on a wind up Jonny? Nobody gives a toss who the scum signs! even more so when the thread is about the next city manager!

Might be a bit early to say... The Mirror says today that Juventus has joined in the chase for Ranieri. If true, could be interesting...

any press conference called at city today? the bbc seem to think it's a done deal:?

it's looking more likely now he's quit Parma and he's said in Italian press about looking forward to "recreating the Chelsea miracle" at City. MEN says that no deal will be stamped until Thaksin has officially taken over. Im still slighty nervous because City being City i'm expecting one final twist

But yes I will be delighted with Ranieri, it will be an excellent appointment (if and when it goes through) which will herald a new era at City. :)

(cue lot's of "hilarious" repsonses) ;)

Hope it is always had a soft spot for City probably partly due to my loathing of the other lot and even more so when my boyhood hero keegan was at the helm! One of my m8's a city fan we've having a laugh about the speculation of all the top managers and glenn roeder will walk in at the press conference! dddddddddoooooohhhh!!!!

Support and the ground are fantastic just need someone into steady the ship and have a clear out? surprised distin was allowed to leave though?

it was on the cards, he's been unsettled for a while, he will be missed, him and Dunney had built a good understanding. its ironic he left citing we "lacked ambition" and then he went to fu**king Pompey??? 8O and we are on the brink of having one of europes top coaches with £50millon to spend, although with richards & onuoha we have cover in that position anyway so I would like him to spend his money on a creative midfielder and a striker...we need a "fox in the box". Im hoping that Ranieri gives Samaras another chance too.

HMMM

this saga is rumbling on a bit too much for my liking. Pre season starts in a month and the transfer merry go round has started whirling and we dont have a coach yet....or any back room staff!!!

and to make matters worse the sunday papers say that if this Shinawatra thing goes tits up that Wardle is lining up ****ing Souness??? 8O which would be a ****ing disaster, we would regress back to the pre-keegan days overnight!!!
