It really annoys me cos lots of ppl close to me have needed blood and I believe everyone should give blood but mine isn't good enough for them, yet they still compain about not enough people giving blood

If it's not suitable, then I'm sure they have their reasons.

B - You just couldn't leave it, could you?!

Yeah No gays I'm afraid, which I think came about in the 80's due to the furore about HIV/Aids etc. Whilst half of me thinks it's somewhat of a repressive ruling, it's one where I assume the decision is made by people with more knowledge on the subject than I.

My blood is perfectly fine but anyone who had a blood transfusion before 1990 (I think) isn't allowed to. I just think that if they test someone's blood is ok (which mine is) why they won't allow you to donate esp when they're always banging on about shortages of blood :?

Why do YOU think?

I know why it is, it's cos of blood screening before 1990 (or whenever it was), my point is that there are lots of ppl who did receive blood before this date whose blood is perfectly fine and yet they're eliminating a large no of potential doners.

Ok, ans this is more of a general point, and perhaps a bit too deep for a casual lunchtime thread, but, in essence (and in no way in detriment to you or your opinion) why do you think they have taken (what you to see) such and odd standpoint? Surely they must have their reasons?

I can see why they had to do it initially cos blood screening wasn't as strict in those days so potentially people could have received contaminated blood..........but surely if subsequent tests prove that a person's blood is fine then they should be entitled to give blood.

Anyway this is way too deep for a Thursday afternoon with a hangover

err...why is eveyone talking about giving blood? the guy is trying to find a bone marrow donor.

Your blood is automatically screened for a bone marrow match though is it not? that's how they determine whether you're a match. You dont just go and donate bone marrow and hope it gets used! :?

I could be wrong but I'm sure that's how it works. If you are a match you get a call and are asked to come in and donate bone marrow :?

You go for a blood test to determine if you match (I think) but the whole process of donating bone marrow and rules surrounding it are completely different (and the process you undergo to donate bone marrow is much more complicated than giving blood).

Everyone on here seems to be saying 'I'll happily donate blood for this guy' but unfortunately giving him blood won't help him at all! :(

No the blood itself isn't going to help him, but the more people who donate and go on the bone marrow register, the more chance they have of finding him a donor. The only way you'll know if you're a match is if you donate blood in the first place, so more people donating can only be a good thing :P

Ah getcha! I didn't realise they did that when you gave blood ;)

Don't worry Scoobs we can't always know everything ;)

I just know because when I go to give blood you are given the option of going on the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Register. Anyone who is willing to be a bone marrow donor goes on this.
I have also been tested in the past to see if I could be a bone marrow match for someone and the way they done this was a blood test. (Unfortunately I wasn't a match  )
