Fresh off getting in, i still dont know where to start...
Yes ive been to Pikes many times. Yes ive seen Harvey in Manchester and really enjoyed...
But this night was something else, Harvey knocked off around 4:30am and ive never been as soaked in sweat as this in Ibiza. From about 1am i couldnt leave the dancefloor, ive read many a post from @Tourist about Harvey and this "chuggie" sound and didnt get it... Well tonight i did, for an hour in there somewhere, i heard music that felt like it was from the future given my naievty. It was so good and id say, whatever your music taste is, just go to this night and you will be blown away
Nice one Bucko. V envious.
Hard to know how discuss this w/o going full nerd, but basically a lot of DJs of a certain vintage and their fans (not far behind!) have settled on a slower groove (sub 120bpm basically) in recent years, which gives them a lot more room to play around with different sounds. It's less about the mixing and more about the vibe. It just kind of evolved over time, people who had got tired of banging parties and just wanted something else, more intimate I guess? It coincided with the revival of interest in disco, balearic, older house, cosmic, Italian, weird stuff from the past and the best DJs weld it altogether. Harvey's probably the most famous champion and via Ibiza has taken it to people who might never have known about it. But at underground parties elsewhere (esp the likes of Lowlife in London or Love International in Croatia) this is where things have been heading for a long time. People who originally cut their teeth on big room house/disco/techno but decided to slow down. For me, my epiphany was hearing the likes of Todd Terje and Metro Area in the mid 00s and after that was into a rabbit hole I never left! It obv won't appeal to everyone, especially if you have a lot of energy to burn. But for me, those druggy soundscapes sound amazing. And I think Harvey ultimately is a master at reading the room.
