It's not only the Seven Dwarfs that can go off to the mines. A couple of our friends (we'll call them Jim and Gina to protect their identity) organised a Sunday trek starting at Las Dalias ambling through the countryside and visiting the old mines, which are sited just off the road from San Carlos to Santa Eulalia.
You may have well noticed the old chimney stacks but not realised what they were. There are numerous theories that these were once silver, lead or mercury mines, originally dug by the Carthaginians and later taken over by the Romans, who used the lead and the islands sling-shot warriors in their various invasions around Europe. Local history shows that the mines were worked up to the 1950's. You can still see the old tunnels, air vents and even enter the mines, which gives you some indication of the harsh working conditions endured by the miners. On the other side of the hill there are ancient open cast mines which can be accessed via a marked path leading from the picnic area between San Carlos and Es Canar.
Should you decide to make a visit please remember to respect the area, don't leave litter and don't take anything away.
