I'm sure it's a great place and your English is fine.

My first impressions were slightly tainted after reading 'Killing Pablo'

I know all that is in the past now, but i suppose it takes a long time for countries with past problems to rectify it's image to the rest of the world.

So where's my ticket?

Bogota? Even I am very reluctant to go there and I am a big fan of Latin America, especially Colombia (though I have never been there) because they speak the most beautiful Spanish IMHO and it is the home country of Gabriel Garcia Marquez (my favourite contemporary author).
I have been to Caracas - and it is difficult to leave your hotel room. You do not feel particularly safe there - but I survived. Never felt more scared in an urban environment, other than in Moscow. Venezuela is a beautiful place - but something is amiss there and I can't explain what.
But Argentina and Uruguay are my favourites from Spanish Latin America (Brazil of course is in a class all by itself - no country can compare to the party atmosphere there!).
Only been to Chile for a few days. Any info on nightlife there? Chileans seem alot more reserved than the rest of Latin Americans - but I could be mistaken.

They are not! My best friend shares flat with two of them and they are very LATIN, if you know what I mean ;)

Thanks Silvia! I guess I must try to get there again and spend some more time wandering around.
Read any good books lately? I am about to begin El Aleph by Borges.

I'm reading the Fight Club, not my type of book but it's fine. I've just read The Last Friend (literal translation) by Tahar Ben Jelloun, very nice and easy to read ;)

Was in Marrakesh in April. It's OK, food is great but you don't necessarily get the best vibes from the locals. Alot of getting harrassed on the streets. They are trying to build up Marrakesh as a new hot-spot destination with the opening of Pacha and other club/lounge/bars. Don't think it is going to work. But what a beautiful country!

Best time to go december/january; clubbers from NY all over, mostly gays.
Marrakesh is catering to french and rich morrocans. The prices for Pacha/Teatro are not affordable to most morrocans.
They're doing an edition of Montreux jazz festival in 2006.
Agree with Mr. MarkB Visionary; it won't work as Ibiza but the clubs are packed, they're getting quality djs but the vibe is not there.
Sorry you got harrassed.

Moha:

I'm gonna be in Marrakesh Nove / Dec: can you answer some questions for me please?

I'm staying here:

http://www.lesjardinsdelakoutoubia.com/anglais/hotel.htm

It's in the Medina, which I wanted, do you know anyone who's stayed there before?

Also I 've heard loads of places to go to eat and drink - they all sound pretty good - what were your favourites?

And whereabouts is Pacha in Marrakesh?

Dress codes for women? My missus is concerned as we're hearing mixed reports as it's an islamic country, I know the clubs etc are fine, but what about general everyday clothing?

Also finally (phew) 8O it's close to the Sahara, I expect it will be chilly at night, but is it freezing?

Many Thanks!! :D

For the hotel, very good choice +it's new; that's very important in morocco as hotels are run down fast.
IMO the best food would be to get invited to a family.
Dar al Fassia was good; they're changing location and I don't know the new owners/chefs. It's a restaurant run by women. The new location is in the modern city (Guéliz)
Another of my favourite is Italian; la tratoria a strret parralel to the Mohamed 5 Avenue, also in the modern city.
The riads/restaurant are quite expensive but worth the try for the settings.
Pacha is in the new Mohamed 6 avenue; the place is fantastic. Taxi ride from central is 5-10 minutes and not far from your hotel but I wouldn't recommand walking there.
For the dress code; it'll be cold at night anyway but like my wife; no provocative dress(the french are dressed provocative+the locals don't appreciate it) not too much uncovered skin but you'll be the judge when you see how the local beauties are dressed.
The Downside: they're getting hard on drug users; 5 yrs for snorting.
Any more questions, just ask.
We'll be there end December/January

I went to Marrakech maybe ten years ago and it is a fascinating place. To be honest, I'd skip the clubbing and immerse myself in the local culture. Loads of good trips you can do out of there - you're on the edge of the Sahara, after all.

Moroccan food is lovely. Try as much as you can!

Moha, Thanks a lot! :D

Great advice! - I'll be there 21st November for a few weeks although we will be going to southern Morrocco for a while to catch some sun.

Saw the Pacha website - marrakesh looks groovy - CAN'T WAIT.

My wife (as with most women) finds it hard to compromise what she wants to wear ;) , but hopefully she'll heed this advice.

Otherwise I'll sell her for a coupla camels.... 8)

(NB: If you're reading this darling, I would only exchange you for at least a dozen, and some rugs)

I've been to Marrakech three times (1982, 2000 and just last Spring). I've seen it change alot - and for the worse in my opinion. People used to be friendlier. Now you sense alot of tension between the poorer and very traditional inhabitants of Marrakech and the rich Europeans/Casa Moroccans who have been buying up property in the old town, pushing families out and having little if no respect for locals more traditional values/style of dress.
I wasn't particularly impressed with the nightlife scene - too phony! Don't go expecting or in search of an Ibiza experience. Go, as Johnny Vodka says, to take advantage of a beautiful country, outstanding food and a very rich culture that merits exploring and deserves respect.
Try renting a 4WD for a drive from Marrakech to Ouarzazate - it is a drive you will never forget the rest of your life. Amazing and beautiful!
I stayed at the following hotel (riad) last Spring: www.riadelfenn.com. An amazing and beautiful place in the old town.

Despite not being the most obvious of tourist destinations, I find many parallels with the nightlife of Croydon and Ibiza.

Despite no coast, there remains a genuine hedonistic vibe about the place.

I recommend the Holiday Inn on the London Road as good accomodation, in close walking distance to the clubs. Kind of Like Croydons answer to Jet, in fact I think they may be owned by the same chain.

I'm looking forward to getting out into the mountains and having a good look round off the beaten track. But I'm also going to make sure i take full advantage of the great restaurants and drinking establishments.

Places always become less appealing in terms of original character the more accessible they become. (which is where all these fantastic Riad boutique hotels come from).

The attraction of Marrakesh to me is the fantastic sights and atmosphere of the city.

I don't expect an Ibiza experience at all - that would contradict my whole reason for visiting (- but it's good to know there is a a decent club there ;)

Just wandering around a Moroccan market can be an amazing experience, especially if you get a whiff of all the spices.

Well said Tycoon but you could have good nites if the average moroccan could afford to go to clubs.
The european owners of riads are the worst; they're getting loads of money on real estate and riads' rentals but not injecting any back in the local economy.
Casablanca' people were always keen to go to Marrakech and spending money.
MarkB; stay away from "cabaret" entrentaiment; the women are just professional.
I did a nite in Pacha in June w/etienne de crecy and duncan fraser so you can get good nites but as Tycoon puts it; it's not ibiza.
A good day trip is to the cascades of ouzoud, spectcular water falls but maybe not in winter.
Another day trip would be to the valley of ourika.
And if you wish to do some skiing, the oukaimeden resort is not far 1-2hrs drive. Old equipment dating from the french occupation.

After years in Asia (too add to the post, koh phangan thailand for similar ibiza experience Big Boom Bar at full moon in morning reminded me a bit of Bora Bora, and Backyard just like Robder said is the Asian DC10) I finally gonna find my way to South America. Reading this post makes me doubt between Colombia and Argentina. ( I have been to Brasil Arraial d Ajuda years ago amazing place) Anyway if someone can give me any advise on Colombia I would be very gratefull.
