Nitzer Ebb!!!

OH MY GOD! Just found out that one of my favorite favorite groups of youth, Nitzer Ebb, is playing at a club in Moscow tonight! :D :D :D

Cue very not-morbid Morbyd :D

You've got it about right there, my friend... Big smile on my face :D

You were only about 6 yrs old when I started listening to this group but they were one of the pillars of the old gothic-industrial club nights I used to go to in the late 1980s. Control I'm Here, Hearts & Minds and I Give to You are still some of my favorite songs.

Killer show last night. What fun! :D :D :D

Not much instrumental performance, as you'd expect given their hyper-synth sound - just two musicians each with a laptop and some drums and triggers. The vocalist Doug McCarthy was in great form, though, and was a ball of energy on stage. Funny thing is he talks just like he sings (kind of like yelling!).

My throat still hurts from yelling along with all the classics - Murderous, I Give to You, Control I'm Here, Fun to Be Had, Getting Closer, etc... it's basically a greatest hits tour in support of their new 2-CD best-of compilation incl. 2nd disc of remixes.

Turns out the group had a pretty decent following here as their biggest album, Ebbhead, came out in '93 just as this market was opening up. The crowd last nigth was a strange mix of clubbing types, gothic punk kids, casually-disguised professionals - average age was probably 30!

If you were into EBM at any point I recommend catching these guys. Next stop on their tour: Alicante, Spain.

Blimey, did'nt realise they were still together. Saw them on both the Showtime & Ebbhead tour in the early 90s. Still got a tshirt somewhere with F**ckhead blazened across the front! My parents loved that one.

What was the crowd like? When I saw them all those years ago it was really aggressive @ the front. Guess the crowd may have mellowed as the years have gone by. Ahead of their time in many respects considering some of the electro stuff around at the mo.

I'll have to dust of Ebbhead, great album and not listened to it in years. Some of the lyrics on that album are inspired...

"if I'm a god
can't keep shooting my load on my own
now bend on down
and receive your crown
I'll give you a necklace to wear
well yeah god is strange
but not sex deranged"

I didn't realize they were still together either. McCarthy looks almost just like he did 20 years ago in the Murderous video but the other main guy is bald and looks a lot older.

The crowd was pretty mellow (i.e. not aggressive), though they were very into the performance. There was a small group bounce-moshing in the middle up front, but nothing serious at all - no slam-dancing or anything. Overall there were lots of clubbing people who were just dancing along and only a handful of punk kids.

I was supposed to see them when they opened on tour for Depeche Mode (when was that? '89?) but we got caught in traffic and then were driving around trying to find a parking spot at the amphitheater while being tortured by hearing that Ebb were on stage. By the time we made it to our seats they were done  Took a decade and a half for it to all come 'round!

Exactly... I don't think a lot of people make the connection but they were hugely influential.

My claim to fame - I sorted their riders for them when they played Newcastle many many years ago when I worked at Riverside........ wasnt half as exciting as I hoped it would have been   But I did have to help some girls out of the front of the stage to the side of the stage who had been crushed against the barriers - ;)

That's so funny, I too got caught in traffic going to see that show with Depeche Mode! That was definitely '89. I saw them on a few other tours though. Love all the same songs you mentioned!

I recently read an article about how they got back together after not speaking for years - I think it was on pacha's web site. One of them had been living in Detroit (my hometown) for quite some time which seemed really odd. Sounds like they got back together to make some $$$$.

That is funny. Was this in Detroit? I was back home in Washington at the time. Never did get another chance to see them until now. (Depeche was great at that show, by the way!)

I'm sure money is involved in the reunion... I figure Mute decided to release this greatest hits compilation and asked if they would go out on the road to support it. The concert t-shirts on sale at the show only list about 10 stops total, mostly around Europe.

Yes, in Detroit.

I remember the Depeche Mode show to be great as well, even though it's scary how long ago that was!
