Nervous About Visiting Ushuaia

Hello everyone,

My friend and I are due to come to Ibiza tomorrow (our 3rd visit in total, just the two of us this time) for Ushuaia and Space closing parties.

However, reading some reviews of Ushuaia have made me slightly nervous. There are numerous reports (most recent I read being 3 weeks ago) of the security staff being extremely violent towards guests and what's most shocking is that most of these victims seem to be women!

Being a tiny person (5"2 with a petite build) I tend to get pushed and shoved a lot in large crowds anyway, and with the combination of a packed venue for the closing party and these psychopaths they seem to have employed as security staff, I'm actually quite apprehensive about visiting the venue.

Our previous experience of Ibiza security staff and clubs have been OK - staff always seem moody but not threatening and clubs are usually busy but there's room to breathe further away from the stage if you need a break.

Can anyone reassure me that they (the staff and Ushuaia in general) are not that bad? Tips on how to avoid any trouble? Or should I cancel my ticket now if I don't want to end my holiday black and blue?

Please help, I was so excited and this has put a bit of a downer on it!

Still absolutely buzzing for Space on Sunday, though :)

Whilst i was out there the girlfriend of a mate had her phone stolen there (she wasn't wasted either). Leaving the staff aside, it does seem to attract some shady people

The most aggressive and unpleasant security I've ever experienced in Ibiza were at DC-10 in 2011 .. and as you know I'm not Ushuaia's biggest fan.

Advice for not having issues with staff outside of thousands-of-euros-a party VIP areas, would be not to get involved when someone else is being beaten up, even when it makes you angry, not to be assertive in any way with bar staff (even when they're deliberately ignoring you and winding you up), not to think that because you're paying a fortunate for overpriced everything you have the right to be treated with anything other than utter contempt by those employed to serve customers, not to jump in the pool (or draw attention to yourself unduly), and to pay twice if the bar staff accuse you of not paying (even when they're wrong). If you think those parameters work for you then you're likely to have a great and trouble-free time at the club.

Basically to be a good little ant (or sheep) and do exactly what the boss wants you to whilst your pocket is emptied, and to smile gratefully if you're treated like a piece of sh!t. If you find the above a most ridiculous state of affairs, or are of a sensitive / assertive disposition or insufficiently spangled to turn a blind eye to the truth & not to care, then you may want to think twice. Not only about this particular club ...

Thanks for your replies, guys. Although I wish they made me feel better.

Looks like I won't be taking my iPhone out with me for pictures, better get my spare old Nokia out.

kimajy - From what you described, Ushuaia is very similar to Pacha where we had several horrible experiences during one visit this summer. I've vowed never to go back there again and left after about an hour or so (despite paying 80 euros plus 15 for a measly bottle of water) because I was having such a terrible time.

I think I'll try and swap my tickets for Amnesia's closing party, if that's at all possible. I hope it is, because I really don't want what little time we have in Ibiza (3 nights) to get ruined.

I was there for Ants on Saturday before last and a) did not notice security beyond the entrance and guarding the VIP areas and b) had no problem with the crowd. The wait at the bars wasn't even very long despite it being packed, although I suppose the closing party will be a little bit more so.

Go. If there's good music you'll have a perfectly good time.

There have been reviews / sightings of door staff at most venues being a bit aggressive in their ways.
People only tend to write reviews when they have something bad to say, how many negative reviews have there been in comparison to the events that have been held there this summer which is around the 100 mark....

If you turn up and just act normal, abide by any clubs rules etc you'll be fine.

yes to both of evo's statements.

Earlier this season we only encountered security at the entrance and the toilets. Had no issues and saw none either. Bar queues and staff were not bad compared to other places i found. This was for Loco Dice's party on a thursday in June.

Don't listen to the negative reviews ! However true that they are , if you stay out of trouble you will be fine . Never had a problem myself

dont worry about security too much, these instances are really exceptions. what is worse are pickpockets - this season it was ridiculous! especially in SPACE main room. spotted one or two A NIGHT evertime I went there in september. one managed to steal my friends phone out of her closed handbag but threw it on the floor instantly (!!) when he saw that it was a reeeaally old nokia ;) so best advice really: old phones!

it's just as bad everywhere else el loco, not just in space. pickpockets are a real pain in the ass. girls just don't bring your phones or give them to your male friends and they shall carry them in their front pockets - problem solved.

Pickpockets work in busy places any time, anywhere, certainly not just in Ibiza and, even there, not only at certain clubs.
I was with the forum's @spacemonkey when she had her phone lifted from her purse in Privilege a few years back.

What people have highlighted is completely true and you can't in fairness single one club out generally for the sort of thing I've (somewhat tongue-in-cheek) highlighted (as you've experienced for yourself). All of the clubs have 'had their moments' and as far as surly bar staff are concerned, Amnesia probably takes the crown. But as far as "staying out of trouble" is concerned, there are occasions when trouble finds you and there's little you can do about it. You take a risk when you go out clubbing - period - and that can happen in any club anywhere at any time.

So the question is basically down to how you react if it does and the worst that is likely to happen is that you quietly leave without a fuss, take it on the chin and forefeit your expenditure for a nasty little encounter. Write it off as a bad job, move on to another club and have a great night. Having (rather happily) volunteered for ejection from Ushuaia in order to continue my night with a new found 'party friend' who had rather drawn attention to herself by jumping topless in the main pool, I can only say that security were polite over the whole affair - although trying to go back in to retrieve her missing soggy shoe would likely have been a bridge too far and may well have ended rather more messily  .

On the phone and pickpocket thing - anywhere there are people flashing massive sums of cash and expensive phones about in a crowded, darkened place there will be thieves and opportunists. There's no shortage of either in Ibiza clubs (or Barcelona, Madrid or anywhere else in Spain for that matter). Just try turning away from your drink for 2 minutes to have a dance at the back of the floor on Space Terrace and you can pretty much guarantee it won't still be there when you turn round.

As everyone has said, just take precautions, don't tempt fate and preferably leave the iPhone behind. You can concentrate much better on the experience without one anyway :D.

I didn't realise this had so many replies - I thought I'd get an email.

Everyone's input is valid and you've really made me feel better so thanks so much for that. Neither of us are aggressive **** heads nor do we get so out of it that we can't control ourselves so if we do happen to find any trouble we'll just count our losses and move onto somewhere else.

I only wanted to take the phone to send a couple of cheeky pictures to our friends who couldn't get time off work/family commitments so I'll just have to be quietly smug :)

Looking forward to it now, especially George Fitzgerald & Maya Jane Coles.

Thanks again everyone.

I had a great time each time I was at Ushuaia... personally I saw nothing you should be concerned about.

Security has better things to do that start messing with someone for no reason... usually there was an incident that caused them to see what's up and sometimes I suppose they may overreact... personally never seen anything negative like that with multiple trips to clubs in Ibiza.
