Unfortunately, the US society is a far violent society than Western European societies. Switzerland has extremely liberal gun laws, but they do not have near the level of crime and violence that we do. If the more guns = more violence principle were true then Switzerland should be a war zone.

Wrong comparison; the firearm issue is completely different here in Switzerland.
Switzerland have tighter laws than US; you can't just walk out of a shop with a gun like you would do in a wal mart or sears.
High numbers of firearms are due to the military keeping their guns at home. Nostrum could say if this still happening.
On sundays, it's usual to see people going to "shoot" in the local "stand de tir" with their rifles. It's a "sport" in switzerland.

moha tells the truth

Moha-
There is a waiting period for firearms in the US, so it isn't like anyone can just go in to a store and walk out with one. Also, shooting firearms is mostly only for sport where I'm from too, wheather it be at the local shooting range or out hunting in the mountains.

The best and the worst of internet forums in action here, god knows how we got to where we are on the thatcher discussion but its bad karma all round. Did i really read bellsniff?!

However the gun thing, whilst i do disagree the varying opionions eloquently expressed here, they have certainly enable me to have a more informed view on a subject I evidently knew less than i thought. Americans & other contributors - i applaud thee:) .

Things changed then; when I lived in the US it was quite easy to buy a rifle, even through sears catalog.
The problem would be more firearms in big cities than in wood&water land.

From an article in today's Guardian:

Is Obama black enough?

Gary Younge reports

...

Obama's racial identity remains a subject of perennial scrutiny. His mixed-race heritage and solid midwestern timbre have left some claiming he is not black at all. His background - raised by his white mother and grandparents in Hawaii and Jakarta, he attended Ivy League colleges and then taught constitutional law at university - fits no known mould of black American life.

It is a debate which tells us at least as much, if not more, about America's racial, ethnic and political obsessions than it does about Obama. So do these perceptions matter? Why do they matter? And how?

...

The answer to the first is easy. They do matter. In a political system where style is at least as crucial as substance, every aspect of how a candidate is perceived matters. During the 2000 election, the media criticised Al Gore's choice of polo shirts five times in eight days; in 2004, John Kerry was slammed for looking too "French".

No, Chewie, I think the Guardian is exaggerating the situation a bit much

In reality, the latest polls (released yesterday) show Obama's support within the black community is now above that of Hillary. So the "not black enough" argument has failed...

Keep in mind; Hillary voted yes to war in Irak:confused:

The Guardian excerpt reminds me of what Chris Rock joked about comments from the media and the white folks about Colin Powell. For those of y'all who did not see his stand up here is what he said.

"Whenever Colin Powell is on the news, white people give him the same compliments: 'How do you feel about Colin Powell?', 'He speaks so well! He's so well spoken. I mean he really speaks so well!' Like that's a compliment, sh*t. 'He speaks so well' is not a compliment, okay? 'He speaks so well' is some sh*t you say about retarded people that can talk. What do you mean he speaks so well? He's a fuc*ing educated man! How the fu*k you expect him to sound, you dirty motherfuc*er? 'He speaks so well.' What are you talking about? What voice were you expecting to come out of his mouth? 'Imma drop me a bomb today', 'I be Pwez-o-dent!'."

so folks
Only a week or so till the first caucus and mr rustywoo's predictions still hold good.
Once her aura of invincibility is broken, Hilary will melt like the wicked witch of the east.

Barack v Rudy methinks

Obama has a really good chance, it seems...

Rudy's got to fight off this Huckabee fellow, who appears to be making quite a surge...

this huckerbee guy is just a flash in the pan.
Obama, however. is the real deal. If he can do this well in white middle class Iowa, just wait till more representative states hold primaries.
