Morbyd

Thank you - very interesting. I didn't realise a lot of this talk was the media and people getting a bit carried away at the new kid on the block

Is your view pretty typical of America as a whole or is the thought of a black or, heaven forbid, a woman president too 'extreme' for a lot of the masses??
The media is getting a bit carried away, but they guy is very charismatic and has created a lot of buzz himself.

I'm not really plugged into "typical" America these days... I did read about a poll in which 62% of people said they'd support a black president. Not sure if those people correspond with the people who'd vote Democratic though.

And yes, I think the US has definitely advanced enough to have a woman president. The problem with that right now is probably the lack of viable candidates... Hillary is the only one that comes to mind.

Don't give it the how old are you line, I studied Economics at University, I do believe I am in a better position than you to talk as virtually a whole year of that was dedicated to Maggie. Please tighten your gums in future you stupid twat.

So, nothing against women as president, but if Hillary wins I am going to seek dual citizenship (sp?). Anyone know how difficult it is to become a UK citizen as an American?

Super Polack - pipe down! did you not read Stephen's thread on controversial posts? :spank:

CU Tyson - oh, come on... she's not THAT bad! ;)

Kudos to Obama for playing it straight though. Admitted his past drug use (ala Cameron ) right away
Cameron ain't admitted nothing:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/drugs/Story/0,,2010624,00.html

"'David felt, and feels, politicians are entitled to a past before they came into politics. He had a past, and he's not going to be talking about it,' a spokesman said."

Obama on the other hand is down with the lingo:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,,2008468,00.html

"In 1995 he wrote a memoir, Dreams From My Father, that had many candid moments, including the confession that, as a disaffected teenager, he had smoked marijuana and taken cocaine. "I had learned not to care," he wrote. "Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it.""

Given a choice, I'd party with Obama. I have the impression Cameron would end up a dribbling mess and need babysitting.

:eek::eek:

Cameron ain't admitted nothing
Ah.. I thought he'd admitted it, since everybody knows!

In any case, for us, it's a definite step forward from Bush (who did coke but hasn't admitted it) and Clinton (I smoked, but I didn't inhale )

The socialist worker?! Hardly the bastion of reasoned, balanced political and social commentary, is it?

Did the choice of words "magnificent year-long miners' strike" not ring the alarm bells?!

 What a magnificent strike it was...we would have no Billy Elliot if it was not for the miners strike!

Obama has a very good chance. Hilary aint got a hope in hell's. her numbers are going backwards fast. approx 40% of ALL americans have said they would not vote for her in any circumstances. it really amazes me that anyone thinks she is gonna do it

obama should be more worried bout (sunshine)john edwards.he ran a great campaign last time and is back with a vengance this

and on the republican side, guilliani(although his two divorces don;t say much for his stability) mc cain is just plain too old (72 next year!)

optimisim nearly always triumphs over pesimism, obama has this in spades.

btw, what is interesting is that the 'professional blacks' in the us (jackson, sharpton and their pals) are uncomfortable with obama as he doesn't share their (slave) history, his dad being born in Kenya.

also, if you look at his family tree, obama is as white as he is black.

my 2cents

  Sorry 'normal' service will be resumed tomorrow with a 'what's your favourite lipgloss' post

I'd appreciate it. I've been insulted hugely by an aggressive Tory Economics graduate from Bournmouth who dedicated a year of his life to Thatcher...And I hold you responsible!

babs, I'm in shock. How intelectual you sound speaking about politics with Morbyd

Morbyd, very interesting, thanks for the feedback about the guy

This is very true. I saw one such person (some university professor) on The Colbert Report a couple of weeks ago talking about how Obama is not really black  Stephen Colbert made her look like such a fool  (If you've never seen this show, you must download an episode or buy a DVD or something - very funny and very smart parody of conservative television pundits.)

Jackson had a good run in, what was it, 1988? But he and Sharpton were always seen as "black" candidates and practically ran as such. Obama, while some have tried to put that label on him, is so much more. I wouldn't want a Jackson or Sharpton in the White House, no matter what color their skin. Obama is a different story.

His support among black Americans lags behind that of Hillary. While some might think that's a bad thing, I think that speaks volumes to his value as a universal candidate.

A shame it only happends once every 10 years  ;)
Allright... where's Barbie? I think she and I should have one deep intelligent conversation a week now. Since she started this one, next week, I will come up with a question about which to seek her wise counsel.

BTW, I found out this morning that MACS makes Irina's favorite cosmetics. Who'd have thought? (must start paying attention at home :spank: )

Undermine me, rather than pick a flaw in the argument itself, nice work. I also studied Critical Thinking ( Debating ).

 My 'wise counsel' is limited to Top Shop's latest arrivals and London club listings so if you can restirct your question to one of those then we might have a conversation  ;)
