Barrack Obama is a fascinating character.
Nigerian father, white mother from somewhere in the "heartland" (Kansas? Nebraska? something like that). Attended Harvard Law School for graduate studies and was the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. Worked in civil rights law, then served in the Illinois state legislature, now a US Senator.
He is a very good public speaker, a fresh face in national politics, and spouts some great themes based on hope and aspirations for the future. He's an unapologetic liberal, would get us out of Iraq sooner rather than later, and would probably make a great president......
.....someday. He might be a bit too green right now. I think the excitement generated by his election to the Senate in autumn 2004 and his keynote speech at that summer's Democratic National Convention generated so much excitement that he's gotten a bit ahead of himself.
I'm not so optimistic about his chances. He's got Hillary in his way. Nevertheless, it's far to early to take this too seriously. 20 months until the election, a year until the party primary elections... a lot can happen.
Kudos to Obama for playing it straight though. Admitted his past drug use (ala Cameron
) right away and people seem to have forgotten about it. He's so far avoided making public gaffes like some other announced candidates like Joe Biden or Mitt Romney. And while journalists keep talking about the race issue, he doesn't (unless asked). I like the fact that he would rather focus on the quality of his ideas.
So, in short
lol
I'm impressed by the guy but I want to hear more specifics about what he stands for before passing final judgement. The experience issue and his electability also worry me - last thing we need is 4 more years of the Republicans in office.
