Monarch collapse

Monarch's gone bust

good riddance

godawful airline

Based on what?

Monday was a very sad day for those losing their job and it is also a very sad day for aviation

That airline has been around for 50 years and has a lot of history. Around when flying was enjoyable. Turning up to an airport and enjoying the experience and getting onto an aircraft with glamorous and professional cabin crew

Whilst they may have been a little more expensive than other low cost carriers their customer service was far better and they would never cancel a flight on you

Look at the media and social feedback as well as the aviation industry reaching out - proves it had something special about it.
The industry are well aware of how close and family like it was working there.

It is an utter shame an airline like Monarch is no longer in what is a poundland like aviation world

I've flown with Monarch 4 times in my life. Atrocious flights and passengers from hell. To the point the Spanish police had to make arrests at Malaga.

So I won't mourn, although it's obv a shitter for the staff

Bad flights because of the passengers?

That could happen with any airline.

The salary and perks for budget airline staff in no way reflect the responsibility these people have.

If I mess up in my job, people might lose some money. The slightest mistake from those guys can end in tragedy
For sure.
Was thinking more of the pilots, surely there are safeguards in place?

There are flying hours limits etc to ensure safety.

But it was written in the financial press this week that compared to Monarch staff the bhs employees got a cracking pension deal.

It really seems to be a race to the bottom in that industry. One less competitor in the market I simply strengthens the hand of the likes of O'leary. Sure I'm being hypocritical as I love a cheap flight, but you have to question whether the staff can stay motivated to perform at the required level.

I don't think I'd want the stress or responsibility, or the time away from family, for the surprisingly low financial returns.

Listen to that radio call in I posted. It’s a Ryanair pilot who tells the story of how it is right now. It’s quite disgusting.

Cunts like O'leary, will now be exploiting the ex monarch workers. Putting them on shit contracts,at a time when they're desperate.

I heard that most of ryanairs problems are down to staff leaving him,its f*** all to do with them using up holidays. Cunts like him cut everything to the bone... and drag industries down with them.

Fortunately Monarch's fleet is all airbus so the pilots will be looking to go to Easyjet, Virgin etc...

And yeah they lost a shitload of pilots to Norwegian, I know of a few people who went to work for Ryanair merely to get into the industry before moving on.

Gutted for Monarch, flew with them once and it was a bit shit like but the staff were great, nearly went for a job with them too.

My lad was thinking of trying to be a commercial pilot but further reading on the Ryanair and monarch stuff has made him think twice. The working conditions imposed upon people who are responsible for keeping hundreds of people safe at a time is pretty surprising

Also has ridiculous barriers for most people, program on ITV recently where Easyjet require £120k up front as security in case you drop out or dont pass the pilots course and I know BA have something similar. The money is, eventually, worth it, but that's a massive barrier to most people.

I must say I’ve always rated Monarch for the same reasons as kimajy - flown with them lots of times to/from Ibiza. Sad to see them go. Am just looking at last min flights for this week and not liking the prices... especially for October :(

Was wondering where you'd got to this year ! :)

You pay £5 less than a competitor and over many many years what happens is

Workforce are paid less
Less workforce with more stress
Airports are more congested and the operation is squeezed making it impossible to work resulting in delays after delays and cancellations
Stressful getting through the airport and ultimately a shitty customer service experience
airline strict on hand luggage
Costs you the price of two bottles of amnesia waters to check in baggage
Waiting an hour to collect your baggage at destination

Ultimately whilst you can fly to more places for less money and more frequent. Paying that little bit less than another airline does a whole lot in the back ground to aviation

I can tell you that Monarch pilots flew about 500 hours a year where as Ryanair pilots flew 900 hours a year and Monarch pilots earned more

The industry is squeezed and flying is less glamorous and about as fun as catching a train

So who is to blame - passengers or the airline?

Paying £19.99 for a flight to Ibiza when it's more than that Manchester to Blackpool on the train is ridiculous. Of course we all snap up the tickets, but I'm one of those who wants to pay more to go back to the good old days when airports weren't shopping malls, you dressed up to fly rather than undress, everyone treated you as a "sir" rather than a cash cow, and you got tour meals and drinks for *free* and they didn't sell you lottery tickets.

Key question - how much more??

Could there be a day when, like trains have first and second-class sections, we have first and second class aircraft and you get what you pay for? How much more would someone like me be prepared to pay for the "luxury" - and what would we get? Larger but fewer seats, more cabin baggage space as a result, meals and drinks provides, use of VIP lounges and fast-track security/immigration thrown in?

Would a company ever dare to try that when even the likes of British Airways have gone all cheap-and-cheerful/nasty??

You can still get most of that on Club Europe British Airways if you fly from Gatwick or Heathrow. If you're willing to pay about a thousand pounds plus return in high season. Or just use Surf Air and blow a few grand. For me, forget it - unless it's a freebie with Avios - but then again you have to pay such ridiculous amounts for taxes now you may as well just buy a ticket from somewhere closer and more convenient half the time ! The only time I'm bothered about premium cabins is on a 7+ hour trip that's absolute hell otherwise. For 2 hours in the air I really don't care.

What I'd much rather see than a drive to the bottom in air fares is cheaper short term airport parking, an end to obscene charges for checked baggage and sports equipment, and more good value restaurants and hotels when I get where I'm going.

I wouldn't go up to a grand for a 2.5hr trip! maybe if I went to somewhere like St. Maarten! But wouldn't mind a bit extra for a bit of pampering.
BTW has anyone used the VIP room @ Ibiza airport? From the literature it doesn't look up to much.
