Yep, I arrived at about 2:30 to be turned away. Went to pacha (along with EVERYONE else) and the rumor was, something happened to the lights.

Sucks =T

oh god not again!! every year there always seems to be issues between manumission and privilege!!!

where are we going?

Hot bad bad news, after big problems with Ibiza’s biggest club Privilege last year, Manumission was unexpectedly canceled yesterday night because of reasons beyond control of Manumission. What a pity, I just was on tour with Manumission, to make a reportage about Manumission backstage, preparing for the show for the next dub-magazine. Now the story has changed a little bit. A empty parking place, empty club, empty pockets. Again on Ibiza some responsible persons don‘t think so far about all the consequences… Before I write anything wrong I wait for more information. Stay in tuned. www.myspace.com/manumission

IS MANUMISSION OVER FOR THE SEASON?
On top of the remarkably negative start of season caused by the closure of major venue AMNESIA , plus the smaller, but equally important underground scene locations DC10 and the BORA BORA beach clubbing-bar, last night (Friday 3 rd of August) MANUMISSION , famously the largest weekly clubbing event at the official BIGGEST CLUB ON EARTH PRIVILEGE – was prevented from going ahead.

Supposedly a major contributory factor to the build up of the incident, the apparent implementation of a large suspended fine, relating to a previous OVERRUN OF AN OPENING PARTY in past seasons, appears NOT to be the direct reason for the stoppage. Fine paid, the event could have gone ahead – it was NOT A BAN on opening, like other venues have experienced recently. However, a spat appears to have taken place between venue owner and event promoter (Manu), resulting in the subsequent impasse where the doors were, it is said, locked on the event.

By some accounts this appears to have been the situation at 10pm (for a party that opens at midnight), though at BAR M in San Antonio, the busy pre-party carried on much later, punters witnessed being arranged for bus ferrying to the venue until around 1.30am, witnesses claim. So clearly there was belief that all would still be resolved. This seems a reasonable assumption given that – again according to some sources (not necessarily accurate) – a similar thing apparently happened a week earlier, but was resolved by 1am , at which point the venue opened. Is that true? Is it not true? IBIZA GOSSIP-MACHINE FANTASY? Who knows.

However, based on the posing of a handful of simplified questions, ANDY MANUMISSION kindly found time to come back to me today and ask me not to report certain 'claims' relating to what has been spread about BAR M and IBIZA ROCKS . He suggests that they are (currently, from his point of view) "A DANGEROUS COLLECTION OF FACTS AND FICTION. PLEASE DO NOT PUBLISH WHAT YOU HAVE HEARD ABOUT IBIZA ROCKS, IT IS RUBBISH, ALL THIS SEASONS GIGS WILL BE IN BAR M AS PLANNED!" So with respect to that, I will not use certain information until that position becomes clearer. If it ever does in an environment where a storm of 'facts' is battering everyone from all directions on an hourly basis. This is August 5 th by the way.

For sure the MANUMISSION team are obviously in major flux right now, surely concentrating all energies on trying to rearrange, and save, a massively impressive and extensive summer schedule. The rumours flying off in most directions are sometimes following a thread that leads to and from them, at source, but like all things here are subject to alteration at every point of relating. Anything can be true, or total bollocks, in Ibiza . With that in mind, read on…

Could the imposing of any previously suspended fine on PRIVILEGE have be tenuously related to a different closure, or because the licensing regime has changed of late and is now playing a reasonably even hand across the board, implementing all previous fines for old digressions?

Two weeks earlier, when San Antonio came under the spotlight of fear shone by the new licensing authorities, the live broadcast of a GALAXY RADIO'S IBIZA WEEKENDER Sunset Show, with HED KANDI, was prevented from going ahead, at BAR M . This appeared to be the first inkling that something was awry with anything related to MANUMISSION business.

It has subsequently emerged – or been claimed in general street gossip etc - that BAR M were possibly now not considered to be holding a correct license to hold live events, which obviously would include such things as their IBIZA ROCKS gigs. These are sponsored by SONY ERICSSON and are being filmed for a second series of the TV show of the same name ( IBIZA ROCKS with SONY ERICSSON' ) by CHANNEL 4 in the UK , so are very important to the image of the island.

There's a thing called a CAFÉ CONCIERTO license, which allows live activities INSIDE a venue to take place. However – and is this fact or fiction - BAR M, though looking increasingly like an enclosed box room club venue at night, is still an outside terrace bar and the performance stage is therefore likely to be considered an OUTSIDE entity, on that terrace. Could that be true?

Technicalities seem to matter greatly at the moment, in the face of the onslaught by what - on the current evidence - seems to be a new government determined to ensure that the clubbing and music scene plays it strictly by the book, with DRACONIAN ACTIONS NOW PERHAPS INTENDED TO ENSURE FEW SUCH DIGRESSIONS IN FUTURE.

Meanwhile, as further warning of intent, KANYA in San An had a ban slapped on IT a few days after the GALAXY RADIO incident. This was apparently in relation to them running some events that were not properly licensed either, though I'm unsure if this was related to current 2007 activities, or past digressions (which tends to be the theme of the current spate of banning orders). So for three days from last Monday (30 th July) to Wednesday (August 1 st ) the whole complex was closed to the public, as a short sharp punishment.

Also, in nearby San Rafael – location of PRIVILEGE - the EL AYOUN Arabic-themed restaurant and glitzy bar – a place well-favoured by the moneyed Ibiza set and also representatives of bronzed-bodied, bejewelled Euro-trash – suffered a similar fate to KANYA . Again, EL AYOUN are in recent years believed to have occasionally crossed-the-line by running some underground parties and one-off events, possibly not considered licensed? Perhaps once more this was a form of slap-back for previous misdemeanours (the recurring theme). Their ban appears to be due to last a couple of weeks, though some suggested that it will last all summer, while I ever heard that it's already open again today! It's THAT KIND OF CRAZY ENVIRONMENT at present.

The fine on PRIVILEGE – unconfirmed – is believed to be somewhere in the region of 160,000 Euros , and linked to the late closure of a past MANUMISSION opening party.

It's further being bandied about - left, right, and centre - that the impasse between venue owner and promoter was partly related to who should be held responsible for the fine – ie: pay for it. Such island tittle-tattle is taking place just hours after the fact.
Also consider, that any such information is likely to have in some way been based on the claims of one, or other, of the two parties involved, so all spreading of information, however messed up later, would already have begun as a view from one side of the argument. Then factor in exaggeration and inaccuracy, addled drink and substance abused brains hearing, re-computing and passing on… and, bah, what's the point of believing anything? Keep in mind that this is an island where 95% of people effortlessly spout endless ****e. You never know, I might be one of them. I'm not, but can YOU be sure of that? Do YOU believe me?

Within hours of the PRIVILEGE BUST UP it was already commonly spread 'knowledge' that rival venues are allegedly involved in tentative discussions with various parties, regarding potential relocation of the event. By afternoon the dogs of disinformation were running around San An claiming that a deal had already been done, for them to go into AMNESIA , possibly sharing with MADE IN ITALY, on Fridays, definitely on Wednesdays before CREAM, probably on… and so on. Every night of the week except Thursday and Monday has been a 'definite'. And of course it's not true, because others say 'they're in SPACE, confirmed'. While even HEAVEN IBIZA has been put forward as '100%, they're doing two parties in there' And so on… Like I said, FUNNY IF IT WEREN'T SO SERIOUS .

SPACE ? Only Monday nights appear to be free, but that's a squeeze between WE LOVE which ends at 6am Monday morning, and the equally huge CARL COX , which begins at 8pm Tuesday evening.

The reality? Who knows… Next thing they'll be telling us that DIVA is going to reopen and that MANUMISSION will party there on ANY , perhaps EVERY NIGHT of the week! And that WOULDN'T surprise me at all!
As ANDY has said, IBIZA ROCKS will go ahead as scheduled at BAR M . Given that he is part owner of the venue he really must know the facts, so I'll take that as said and done.

However, a movement of MANUMISSION from PRIVILEGE (and don't discount peace breaking out, though all street word is that it definitely won't – we're in Ibiza remember) would lead to major promotions already in any potential venue being affected. And having a serious say-so about any potential movement by any element or offshoot of the MANUMISSION juggernaut into their domain.

Like when MANUMISSION switched from Monday to Friday last summer, a switch of venue would cause a venue-swapping frenzy by established major promotions next summer. And this is not even taking into account the response of the club owners themselves.

In the previous stand-off between promoter and owner, just over a year ago, MANUMISSION swapped from their famous MONDAY night slot, over to FRIDAYS after 12 seasons. MANU openly and regularly dispatched information to all ears suggesting that they did this in part because it allowed them to take ALL of the door takings, rather than the 50% they were previously rewarded with on the Monday deal. This, they claimed, secured their long-term future, and planning, if not the venues. The club were to rely on the huge bar takings.

Could it be that THIS issue is really at the root of the problem? After all, regardless of crowd numbers, if an owner can make more money from an event a quarter the size, is there an incentive to hang onto a golden goose that has ceased laying him valuable eggs? Is it now better to allow a mammoth-sized event to depart, so that other parties at the famously huge venue might breathe on other nights of the week?
Or will all be resolved and next Friday MANUMISSION will return to the PRIVILEGE fold? Currently that seems unlikely.

Don't know if you wrote this?? It's very interesting and I think another major sign the **** is about to hit the fan on the island.

It's also a wake up call to all us "Brits" (I'm Scottish, so thats not me) that we don't own the island. Never have and never will. Things are changing and maybe for the better.

Thier seems to be a lot of posturing going on from what I can see as a layman and I hope this does not spoil too many folks holidays (or is that what the aim of this is?) and we can get back to enjoying ourselves and knowing that if we want to go somewhere it will be open. (Did ticket money for Manumission get refunded?).

And what about Eddie Temple Morris starting his "DanceRocks" nights on Friday in Es Paradis. Bringing in Rock DJ's to play dance music just shows that big name DJ's, and especially english ones have had thier day and don't contribute to the Islands economy any more than local guys do or could.

2 things could be happenin as I see it.

1. For political reasons changes are being made to "Clean up the island"
2. Gansters are asserting thier influence and want to take over.

**** both of those are the same thing??

Why don't we all go to Brazil next year? Pay more for flights but party on the beaches for free and not pay €12 for a drink?

I'm watching these developments with bated breath and as I said above I am a layman/clubber who sees changes happening and still can't make up my mind if these are good or bad.

Ramble over. Lets just watch this unfold. See you all for "carnival" next year

One aspect of the whole situation has really mystified me. Obviously, as a clubber it is galling to see the venues where you have had some (many) of the best nights out of your life getting hammered by the authorities, but we have to ackowledge that if the promoters are breaking the law, or allowing the law to be broken, they run the risk of punishment. What I don't get is how past misdemeanours, which most reports seem to imply were considered 'dealt with' by all parties at the time, can now be dragged up again and more draconian sanctions imposed.

I didnt write the article, theres a link at the bottom of my post which will take you to the website it came from.

The island's setbacks this summer have been unfortunate. Id be very surprised if theres any daytime partying allowed next season - other than secret illegal parties.

Glad I read this before I left.

It's sorted out my decision between Pure Pacha and Manumission for the coming Friday.

Xtravaganza & Spinclub (which have badly performed so far)

Have they? Spinclub had some decent guests on when I was there and I thought it would do well at Space.

Surely you can't just oust a night mid-way through a season?

Also, does Space (or any other venue) have anywhere near enough room to house one of the Manumission 'shows'?
