KM5 is a rip-off

There, I've said it.

I went last Wednesday (22 June) with two of my friends for my boyfriends birthday having heard such good reports about it. As he's a veggie, I checked beforehand to make sure there would be a good selection, and was assured there was loads for him to choose from - even the Rough Guide said it had a wide selection for our meat-free chums.

We arrived at midnight, the time of our booking and was told by a rather surly lady that our tale wasn't ready but we could have a drink (gee, thanks  ). I personally hadn't expected it to be in quite the same league as Pacha et al and there 150 euro+ bottles of spirits. We, we stuck to a bottle of beer of which it was the cheapest quality KM5 could be bothered to get.

30 minutes and several tummy rumbles later, we were eventually seated in the very attractive, if tiny, dining area and presented with the menu. Imagine our horror to discover main courses described as vaguely as "chicken" yet commanding over 20 euros. If I didn't care what I ate, I'd have just gone to McDonalds.

The most annoying thing was that the alleged fantastic veggie choices were merely boring sounding salads...at about 16 euros each! Despite the fact that I was paying, and still happy to (even if it would've been through gritted teeth) my boyfriend decided that he wasn't happy for me to pay half of what would basically amount to 200 euros for the table, so we left feeling somewhat hacked off.

Have they just suddenly decided to hike their prices up or is this how it's always been? I don't mind paying for quality but it did reek of them taking the piss somewhat, as they realise how trendy they're perceived as.

We ate there one night. It is a bit pricey but I really loved the atmosphere. We showed up without a reservation and they gave us a pretty decent choice of tables.

As for the food, the dishes aren't very well described on the menu (basically, it's a list of 3 kinds of beef, lamb, and chicken!) but if you ask the waitresses, they'll tell you the side dishes and how each thing is prepared. I actually selected my dish based on the side dish

I got "Lamb Chops", which turned out to be grilled and served with a side of flavorful cous cous. My wife had "Filet Steak" or something like that. It was grilled to a perfect medium-rare and came with mushrooms and a sauce. Her meat was great and my side dish was better.

We didn't try the salads, though.

I've never found KM5 overly expensive, we normally have 2 courses for me, 3 for Tom plus wine and water and it's always less than 100 euros which I think is reasonable for the food and the gorgeousness of the setting.

I have mentioned on here before that for veggies it's not a good choice, I'm ok cos I eat fish but if I didn't I know that the selection is really limited.

I don't think a 100 euro dinner for two is ever really "reasonable". It's pricey.

But I felt the dinner we had there was worth it. Our meal worked out to about 87 euro with tip because we didn't order a bottle of wine (Irina drank wine by the glass and I drank beer)

I've always thought it reasonable and the food better than average. i agree about the surly staff though, although the waitresses are generally really sweet and helpful.

i was also there last summer and i loved it! of course it's not cheap, but the meals we had there were very tasty and not overpriced imo.

staff was friendly, we had a nice table and the amtosphere there is just lovely. i'll definitely go back within the next two weeks!

i've never been, so can't comment on the food, decor, service etc. what i can say is that km5 is on the 'real ibiza' itinery for certain people. it represents buying into the dream that is ibiza - just like visiting certain bars by the port, certain clubs etc. it's a way of saying 'i did ibiza my way'

i do it myself, much more affordably, by drinking and eating in bars used by ordinary folks. it's my way of saying 'look at me, i'm a bit like an ibby and not a tourist any more'

the same happens in, dare we say it, the west end. it's all part of our dreams.

every month a write a guide with bars and clubs and restaurants. i rarely ever recommend any i ever go to because people coming here on holiday want something else......the media version of ibiza.

I guess I've just become London-ified when you pay £100 for meal for 2 so 100 euros seems really reasonable  ;)

I dont think 50 euros each is bad for 2 courses and wine :?

I cant wait to try it, every year i say im going to try it and i never do, THIS YEAR I 'AM' GOING TO TRY IT! :)

I booked a table with KM5 over the internet for Sunday 19th at 1am in the morning. When we arrive that morning, we were told by a waitress that our table had not been booked. I stupidly had left the email printout back at the apartment, and the resturant was packed, so we were getting ready to order a cab and leave :(
I stressed to the waitress that I definately had booked with KM5, and she asked us to wait while she asked her manager.
We bought a drink, and 10mins later she came back, polite as anything, apologising for losing our booking, gave us a free glass of champagne each, and promised to find us a table asap. 5mins later we were seated in a lovely table ordering our food. The waitress couldn't have been more helpful, our food was gorgeous and didn't take too long to arrive (we all ordered steak). Overall it worked out at about 40euros each, for a main and a few drinks each, which I thought was ok.
Both times I've gone to KM5 I've had a really good time, and I was especially pleased with the service we got after they lost our booking, it was as though they really didnt want to lose our business (they must have thought we looked rich or something, how wrong were they! )

Mambo, 50€ each would be ok in the UK, but in Spain, if you pay 50€ each you should expect top quality food, top top service, top top list of wines and top everything

So just to recap, it should all be 'top' ;) :D

London-ified

Me too!

A tad pricey in places maybe but reassuringly so I feel!

...but it has to be said, you're complaining about the price of a 'fairly expensive' meal on an island known for charging in the region of £6 for a bottle of water in its clubs! Surely this puts the whole thing in perspective?

KM5 is a gorgeous place...great for a bit of pre-club hammock time.

(and those salads are spectacularly yummy - not just the bog standard lettuce, tomato and cucumber job )

All this talk of food is making me hungry. Cant wait to get my teeth into that soggy sausage roll I got from the canteen :? :(

Since you're on the subject, whats the norm in Spain concerning tipping?? Do waiters get a percentage from the bill? Or are their wages purely based on tips?

What's happened to us, we need to re-embrace our roots  ;)

Seriously! Things have got to be one way or the other for me!

Stupidly overpriced, decadent, showy and stuck up its own ar*e or scuzzy, smelly, dirty, horrible, edgy and tragic.

Who wants sensibly priced, mainstream, safe and comfortable??? I'd rather be served/sneered at in an overpriced restaurant by a raddled f*cked up tranny with runny makeup and 'issues' than a nice waitress in a 'comfortable' restaurant serving sweet families and honeymooning couples that want a 'nice' evening and lots of lovely tourist shots.

Snob? Me? ;) 8)

That's my point.
