Joys of IPOD

Basically it's this, I have amassed over the years 100's of cd's, all of which are currently stuffed into a shelving unit in the lounge, much to the missus's disgust, she says it looks untidy and ruins what is a nice cabinet (she does have a point). so I have promised that I would get all of them copied onto the ipod and then stash them out of site. This is taking ages, however it's great as im constantly being re-intorduced to albums I had basically not listened to for ages & had sort of forgotten.....eg

Primal Scream - "give out but dont give up"
verve - urban hymns
Way out west - "blue"
Leftfield - "leftism"
renaissance the 2nd mix by john digweed
the best of the lightning seeds.....ay don't knock it ;)
 
in an interview, sasha was asked how he would explain house music/acid house/dance music culture to an alien.

his answer was that he'd pop a gary in his mouth and make him listen to leftism.:lol: 8)
 
I've traded up to the 80gb so with 60gb more room I'm putting all my old CDs on there :) Highlights:

Rage againt the machine: self titled album, pretty much every track
Way out west: Intensify (especially mindcircus)
Korn: follow the leader (proper angry music)
'Aural sex' covermount CD for Ministry magazine (remember them?) mixed by John Creamer & Stephane K
Stevie Ray Vaughan: 'Soul II Soul'

JJ, there's more to life than the iPod.

By that, I mean it's a good idea to rip all your CDs onto your computer even if you don't load them all onto your iPod (I carry an iPod mini... only 4gb but more portable). It took me 3 weeks at about 50 discs a day.. I was taking 10-15 discs with me to work, and using 2 computers at home in the evenings! But it was worth it.

Now, I've got my whole collection on my desktop and on an old extra laptop with the sole purpose of sitting on the shelf plugged into my stereo (oh, and to show random photos like a picture frame when the screensaver is on.).

I love my discs, and spent hell of a lot of money on them, so they're still displayed in a bookcase in the living room. But I never take them out... when I want to listen to some music, I just walk up to that laptop and choose an album.

Seeing all your music as a list on the screen makes it easy to not forget your older albums too... the other night, I loaded up some R.E.M. for a change of pace 8)

YOu don't need a permanent laptop plugged to your stereo, plugg your ipod and it's easier, smaller and nicer

Totally disagree.

- you can use a much larger hard drive. All my music wouldn't fit on an 80gb iPod.
- it's just as easy to plug a computer into your old stereo as an iPod. One cable.
- it's also easier to search for and select music on a computer screen than on that little iPod screen.
- I suppose if you've got limited shelf space, size is important, but otherwise I don't think size matters (:lol:)

Oh, and if you're on a network, you can set it up so that you can control that music computer from any other one in the house. So, if you're on your laptop in the kitchen, you can change the music from the stereo in the next room.

I'm jsut giving another alternative. Not everybody has hundred old laptops at home to play with :?

Yes, size is important.:? Maybe you like the look of your lounge with a laptop and all the wires permanently there, but I do care of the look of my lounge. The less the better, and that include wires and size
 
Yeah i have an 8GB nano and it barely covers a teeny tiny bit of my music.. My music stored on my computer isn't even a quarter of the music i have... and my music is what takes up most of my space on my computer.

For this purpose, you can pick up an old used laptop for the same price as an iPod! (but then, of course, you'd have to buy an iPod or other mp3 player for mobile usage)

As for the laptop, in my case, it sits on the bookshelf next to the stereo. When you're sitting in the room, the bottom part isn't even visible and the screen visually fits right in with the framed photos nearby. The wires are invisible as they're in the back. It's not as unsightly as you make it out to be!

To be honest, you sounded a bit too convinced that your option is the only right, and I don't discuss with owners of the absolut truth, specially in english
