James Frey - A Million Little Pieces

ahem.

I posted the Reuters article because I thought it was funny that some muppet was preparing to sue Frey and his publishers. Seeing as we were just discussing the book, I thought you enlightened minds might find that interesting. I have been proven wrong.

Just joking with you Morby ;)

I finished this work of 'fiction' last night and I won't spoil it for anyone who's thinking of reading it but at the end there's a final summary of the outcome of all what happens to the author and the people he'd been in this really intensive rehab centre with and some of what happens to them is so sad

I wanted a pink fluffy ending where everyone lived happily ever after :?

I love books me.

i decided to read Frey's book after all your comments on here - nearly at the end now and i have really enjoyed it. I don't care if most of it is fabricated.

I read recently that Frey had to go back on Oprah Winfrey's show (not sure if this has been mentioned above), the show which originally propelled his book into the limelight, to face her accusations of betraying his readers...

never let the truth get in the way of a good story i say ;)

Another good read on the same lines as Frey's book is Addict by Stephen Smith - published in 1997 and is basically the same type of story but a British man. There's a bit too much of the "religion saves us" message in that one though.

i'm going to get My Friend Leonard next - is it any good?

I've read Addict and thought it was excellent. You'd like Augusten Burroughs - Dry as well Red.

I've not read My Friend Leonard yet but it's on my to read list.

i've just seen on imdb.com that Addict is being made into a film directed by Gollum from LOTR no less (isn't that your friend???!!!)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462171/

Augusten Burroughs sounds good - might read the first book Running with Scissors first though - what do you think?

Why is it we like reading about frazzled drug ravaged drunks?

PMSL that Gollum gets around

I'm just starting Running with Scissors now, I don't think it really matters which order you read them in, altho if you read Running with......first it might explain his subsequent behaviour in Dry 8O

Do you think we read them cos then we can say 'well we're not that bad'

BOOK CLUB UPDATE :D

So, on 7th Feb i'd nearly finished Million Little Pieces, since then i have become addicted to reading the books recommended to me above. Thankyou very much for your ideas!

Here's my two cents worth on each anyways... (p.s i'm an absolute shower of poo at writing reviews so i'll be dead brief!)

A Million Little Pieces (James Frey): absolutely fab, very different style of writing, that i really enjoy. As i said above - who cares if it true or not?

NEXT, i read
Running With Scissors (Augusten Burroughs): another great book, very funny and sad at the same time

NEXT, i read
Dry (Augusten Burroughs): a continuation of the above book, but nowhere near as good i dont think, until near the end.

NEXT, i read
My Friend Leonard (James Frey)
Managed to find copy of this and was well chuffed!
This is the book i enjoyed the most - a blinder, literally! i cried for the last 20 pages - brilliant.

So that's 4 books in 3 weeks - not bad!!! 8)

Please recommend my next book! I'm suffering cold turkey!

Glad you enjoyed Red, I read Running with Scissors last week and thought it was brilliant, so funny but so sad at the same time.

At the moment I'm reading:

Belle de Jour - The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl (only read a few chapters but it's a frank and very funny account of a high-class escort)

And just finished Armistead Maulpin - Tales of the City (don't know if you've read any of his books, they follow the life and loves of a group of at first unconnected people in SF)

Next up to read is James St James - Party Monster

Have you read any Ben Elton Red?? I find his choice of subject so diverse from one book to another but I can never put them down.

Cannot wait to read My Friend Leonard too.

good books

welcome to the ibiza forums book club...

i highly recommend A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius by David Eggers. its long but intense...oh and douglas coupland throws together a pretty cool tale...i's recommends microserfs or hey nostrodamus...the first being the best for the techie at heart...
