Maybe I've been missing out, but are there DJ's out there who swing turntables around their heads or something?
From where I'm standing - someone sticking records on a turntable ain't all that exciting to watch. In most clubs I go to you can only see the DJ's upper body and head sticking out the top of the booth. Doesn't really matter what he's playing on.
There are exceptions - Jeff Mills is an artist on the turntables but again I don't really have any interest in watching him all night. I'm too busy dancing and enjoynig the music with my friends.
Anyway, I've never really gone with the 'turntables are better to watch'. Although I've heard it said many times.
I love everything about DJ'ing and I love doing it but for me - a DJ is not a visual entertainer, never has been, prob never will be. That's why VJ's are so popular in the big clubs. DJ's are about music. Stuff you can listen to, dance to, enjoy!
Don't have any problem with people using vinyl - think everyone should find what style suits them best and go with it. I think too many people are trying to justify themselves and their way of doing things which they shouldn't have to do (myself included - constantly explaining my reasons for going digital to vinyl purists). It's a real shame but there has been a lot of bitterness (on all sides) regarding the vinyl / cdj / digital issue.
Should be so much better that everyone has a choice and we should be able respect what everyone does rather than criticising for opting for a different medium.
Should state that that last bit wasn't really directed at anyone in particular in case anyone takes offence - I'm just expressing some displeasure at some of the negativity within DJ circles.
