Ibiza: The Last Great Big Puff

Can someone, because frankly i cba to read everything on the smoking ban  , clarify exactly whats what with this ban...

Normally im used to smoking anywhere and everywhere when i go abroad, so am i right in saying, Ibiza smoking laws are now like here in the UK....as in, one has to go outside to smoke a cigarette....:?

Correct Vic :D

B*stards

I dont mind it here coz it means i dont bother smoking as its always cold or wet and can never justify standing in that sort of weather  but on holiday i enjoy smoking as it, stupidly  becomes part of my holiday lol

Give up smoking...save your lungs and have more money available for booze :)

That's how I understood it - no smoking in bars, clubs, restaurants etc etc etc.

The upside is that the climate is good enough to sit outside for dinner and at a bar etc. The downside is the issue with the clubs. The irony being that most have had to get rooves etc. in order to stop annoying local residents. We were so disappointed when we first went and found all the clubs enclosed. Now they'll all have to create outside smoking areas, and then will no doubt get in trouble for that.

One gets a strong sense that Ibizan government and society in general is trying to make clubbing as difficult as possible because they have higher ambitions for attracting the Monte Carlo yachting set and the upper-middle classes instead. That being the case, they'd better hurry up and build some golf courses and decent accommodation, so they can rival Quinta Do Lago and Vilamoura in Portugal, plus Cannes and St Tropez.

Jesus Chris, why dont they embrace their country for what it is 'mainly' known for. At the end of the day, they are still raking it in from tourism, who cares what for  lol

Quite. My understanding is that the economy would be in a whole different shape if it wasn't for the billions they make every year from tourism. In fact, as far as I understand it, many people get to have the entire winter off because the government makes so much money in tax during the summer that they can afford to pay people some kind of special seasonal dispensation during the off-season.

Who knows what way it will go? I only know what I've been told by ex-pats out there - Ibiza wants to start down playing the whole clubbing thing, and attract an entirely different class of tourist. In short, they want their island back! The evidence is already there - they shut DC10 down for 2 years, all the clubs have had to put rooves on etc. Numbers of people are down as well (I understand) - although that could be partly due to the recession.

We wish we'd gone years ago, when it was in it's hayday. But still enjoy it now - perhaps best that we didn't see it at it's most free, because then we would be disappointed. Apparently Miami is better because they still have beach parties etc.

I suspect the best little parties are reserved for the locals .... ;-)

so many untruths, rumours, hearsay and bull**** in here, i wouldn't know where to start in replying.

I'm not deliberately spreading lies, rumours or bs.

Please tell us the truth then. I'm only reporting what I've been told (I think I made that clear), but it could be entirely wrong.

Frankly, I hope it is. Please disabuse me of these notions, rather than flaming.

1. i think the term for what you're describing in the first paragraph is called "dole"!! nobody would rather be on it than working!

2. dc10 wasn't shut for 2 years. also what has the fact clubs had to put a roof on (20-25 years ago) got to do with playing down clubbing. it was to do with neighbour complaints and served as a way to enable them to exist for the last 20 years, hardly damaging!!

the whole "playing down the clubbing" thing is only the same as every fan of ibiza promoting the fact that there is more to the island than clubbing. it's not a bad thing! numbers were up last year, numbers are even better this year already.

3. ibiza has beach parties. every day, several of them on each day!

it was when you said things like " The evidence is already there" and then said things that weren't true, which was the rumour/bs.

"My understanding is that the economy would be in a whole different shape if it wasn't for the billions they make every year from tourism."

Is that untrue?

"many people get to have the entire winter off because the government makes so much money in tax during the summer that they can afford to pay people some kind of special seasonal dispensation during the off-season."

I was told that people got paid benefits or something during the winter once they'd worked all summer. Is that untrue?

"Ibiza wants to start down playing the whole clubbing thing, and attract an entirely different class of tourist."

They seem to be building up areas like Marina Botefoch with all the new apartments etc. I've been told the government wants to attract more of the yachting fraternity, and fewer of the clubbers. Is that wrong?

"they shut DC10 down for 2 years"
It was shut when we went in 2008, and both times that we went in 2009, although I think it opened late in October 2009.

"all the clubs have had to put rooves on"
I was under the impression that Amnesia terraza, for example, used to be out in the open.

"Numbers of people are down as well" - is that wrong?

" Apparently Miami is better because they still have beach parties etc." - that's what I heard. Perhaps they don't ...

"I suspect the best little parties are reserved for the locals .... ;-)" If I recall correctly, I was told that on this forum last year!

I do apologise for my ignorance.

Thanks for the response. Mine came in before I saw yours.

The overall thing of Ibiza wanting to attract different types of tourists is something I've heard a bit.

Maybe you could go a bit easy on people who don't actually live there?

fair enough.

i was going easy! ;)

it would be the same as me saying hereford is this and that and the other or worse, whatever your line of business is, being loose with my words about that product or service or the company.....you'd take it personally believe me.

there are beach parties every day in the summer, anybody can go.

i think we need to point out that the smoking ban is a national one introduced by the government of spain. very similar to the one introduced by the british goverment not long ago. whether the politicians in madrid have considered the effect it might have on a small island far away is a moot point.

You can say what you like about Hereford - I don't think I've ever been there! Lol ;)

People put my town down all the time - and yes, it is annoying. So, I'm with you on that.

But I wasn't meaning to put Ibiza down! I tried to make it clear that I was merely reporting what I'd heard from a number of sources. If I have it all wrong - then I'm truly glad, because I'd like Ibiza to remain the open, free partying place that people like me want to come to for a couple of weeks each summer. And more often, as it happens.

I'm sure it can be quite exasperating having all these ignorant touros spouting bollox on the forum. I apologise if I have it all wrong, and I certainly didn't mean anything personal to anyone or even anything negative about Ibiza - I f'g love the place!

I'm curious to see what it will do to it's clubbing industry.
Since the smoking ban, and due to the recession, the numbers of pubs and clubs closing have steadily increased (although this has decreased in the last year or so)

I wonder if it will be the same in Ibiza?

And will the clubs try and get each other in to trouble over the ban?
As I understand it, the fines are fairly hefty, and some of the clubs (e.g. Amnesia and Space) don't always seem to get on with each other...

I think you also need to account for the fact that supermarkets sell booze dirt cheap, this has hit the bars/clubs in the UK harder than people not being able to have the odd fag now and again.

Do you honestly think people won't go to Ibiza just because they can't smoke 10 B&H in the sun?

How will the clubs try and get each other in trouble? One owner calling the police to say I think I've just seen a young tourist purchase 20 superkings and head towards the entrance of Space, please go and close them down.

I worry about people sometimes.

It's not so hard to fathom. Just try for a second. Use that brain cell.

They could call each other out for being permissive about people lighting up inside the premises (whether intentionally permitted or not). A few photos here and there. Get one another fined.

Probably more of a problem for little bars than the big clubs though.

Why say ue that brain cell?

You have some kind of issue speaking like that.
