Smoking
Stricter smoking legislation has failed to reduce the number of smokers in the country. This is the conclusion of a survey carried out by the Spanish Society of Neurology and Thoracic Surgery. A year after the blanket smoking ban was introduced initial results showed there had been a slight rise in the number of smokers aged thirteen and over, reaching 20 percent of the population. Alarmingly the statistics suggest that smoking among young people is on the rise “which indicates that prevention is not working” commented the Vice President of the Society, Juan Antonio Riesco. Among children, nine percent are passive smokers and of these, 51 percent are exposed to smoke at home.
The survey showed 22 percent of men and 18 percent of women smoke, with consumption showing a slight decrease to twelve cigarettes a day on average. Riesco said that during the past twelve months only 27 percent of smokers had tried to quit; 14 percent of them had not lasted 24 hours and 72 percent returned to the habit within four weeks.

Smoking
During 2012 some 900 inspections were carried out on possible infractions of the anti smoking laws, which came into force just two years ago, and 168 cases were opened. There were 265 inspections on non-food outlets and 646 where food was on offer; 64 of these were as a result of complaints by the general public and the others routine checks by the Health Department. Fines amounting to 122,000€ were levied for contravening the no smoking rules.
It is worth mentioning here that smoking is top of the list of deaths caused by avoidable causes; in fact of every 1,000 deaths, 142 are due to smoke inhalation, whereas only twenty are as a result of traffic accidents. In Spain as a whole last year more than 3,000 passive smokers died as a result of other people"s addictions.
