Hyte

ok so we got there just after 2am - as el loco points out the terrace was almost empty then. on the other hand though, at that time, the main floor was nicely busy.

mano le tough was very good indeed (I have to say I did expect no less). the second hour of his set was amazing. I was then also pleased to see that the terrace filled up to a 'perfectly busy' state by about 3:30am. I was only ever gonna go to see MLT and we were pretty tired, so left short after maceo started around the 4am mark. and yeah, when walking out of the terrace, I looked into the main room and saw that it was almost deserted. so I cannot say how long the party went on - I guess 7am, maybe a bit later, but I have a feeling they might have closed the main room early, seeing how empty it was at 4am. not sure about this though.

so - overall opinion: great music - I knew this night would be right up my street. as for how busy it was - there were basically enough people to fill one of the two floors and that's it. the majority of the people were in the main room first and then everyone simply traveled over to the terrace.

we have to consider two things of course:
1. it was one of the quietest dates for them of the year - simply because the mid-june weeks are pretty quiet. so this puts me in a positive mood and makes me think 'yep, will do fine'.
2. on the other hand we also have to consider that yesterday night, HYTE had no competition at all yet. no we love yet, no paradise yet and also no 'indirect competition' such as coxy and enter which are on nights before and after but cater for similar crowd.

I think we'll just have to wait and see how things pan out.

I always thought this was probably at best just a one-room event! I know it's not Amnesia's style to ever close a room for a night...... but in light of what you say above I think for Season 1 maybe they should have made it Terrace only event. Could have packed out that most weeks. Good luck to them though, I really hope they get it to work. However, a bit like Gerber's WOTG at Pacha in 2013....we all rooted for it.... but in the end just a bit too much direct and indirect competition maybe...

Thanks for the report Stivi, even though it is only mid June, I think these guys are going to struggle, I think Pan Pot is as good as anybody from a techno standpoint right now (having seen them 3 times in last 5 months or so) and for them to have an empty room is pretty rough. Also as you mention once competition starts to open it'll be tougher and I think Wed is in a little bit of a dead zone with people resting up mid week.

However, a bit like Gerber's WOTG at Pacha in 2013
Separately, this killed me, I loved this party and concept and have seen Guy do 3 or 4 open to close sets at his recent residency in Ny, he is far superior in dj ability and reading a room in my opinion than to most guys out there right now, however, I am happy he found a home at Beach House

I really think it's too early to tell guys. the opening party last week did well, they only had a few hundred people less than cocoon opening. this week wasn't great in attendance, but that was to be expected. the terrace was perfectly busy for the second part of the night.

also don't forget one thing - in season one and two of music on, the main room often was empty. only last year it really started 'living'.

(Sorry about my English)
Maceo played until 7h30 after a failed "sit down". He asked to play longer but the amnesia guy refused. I felt like Manoo le tough's set didn't fit the crowd or atmosphere. He jumped from dance floor efficient tracks to more dark sounds, adjusting his selection and he succeeded on the last half hour.

I hated the first 1h30 of Maceo plex, he played too easy and failed some transitions. He switched styles, changing tracks just before "the break" parts of tracks. Cheesy vocals and not so nice tracks but it worked for the crowd.
After 4.30 he got into a more techno/electro sound and we really enjoyed his set until closing track.

Here's my video of the closing track :

Yeah no way he was gonna close with Conjure Baleria. Last track would have been his remix for Sordid Affair which like every other DJ is closing with.

They should have let him play out the full track at least! Ahhh...I've never seen ppl in Toronto do the sit down thing, only vids of ppl in South Amwrixa/ Central America doing it.

What is a sit down?

serious question?

people sit (duck) down during a quiet part of the track (a bridge) which is often without full beat, then when people realise, they follow and sometimes the whole floor is ducking down and then, when the beat kicks in again, it feels like an explosion as everyone around you is jumping like a madman.

that said, the era of the best sitdowns is a few years ago. due to the amount of ket consumed currently, the energy on the dancefloor is often not as high qs it used to be a few years ago...

Sitdowns are only cool when it happens by itself and not with the someone from the booth telling people to get down.

There's a fine line with Ket. Just a bit makes you dance more....too much and you're not moving much

agreed on both accounts.

on point two - my opinion is that sadly lots of people don't understand / know about that fine line you describe

Personally I do prefer Maceo being a producer than a Dj...
I saw him playing at Warung in Brazil in the end of 2014 and his sets was almost the same from his last boiler room....he made a lot of mistakes, use too much fader effects being annoying sometimes.
I think he playing as Maetrik much more interesting and fits much more with Amnesia..but as we know less comercial of course.

agreed brazo,

maceo is no doubt an amazing producer. and in the last two years he really rose to the next level in terms of fame & demand. but, as much as I love almost everything he produces, as a DJ he's in my opinion somewhat limited. I really rate him, but after seeing him playing about 8 times in the last 12 months, I feel there are limits to his DJing abilities - in both technical as well as track selection issues. don't get me wrong please, I love the stuff he produces, but as a DJ I'd wish he'd be a bit more creative/varied. this is really a personal opinion and I can totally understand if people disagree :)

Exactly Stivi...I feel the same!
