How many five-star hotels?

I, for one, am sad at this development - I've stayed in the Playa Real several times and it was a real find - a tasteful, quiet hotel in an unspoilt part of Ibiza, but close to Ibiza town (especially via the boat from outside El Corso) and well placed to get to other parts of the Island.
Judging by the feedback that was posted in Ibiza Spotlight and many other places, there will be a lot of disappointed people. Many people I spoke to (some who were there each of the 5 times I visited over the last 3 years) had been going for 10, 15 or more years, and many of the team of staff that made it such a haven had been there for 15-20 years too. It was just formal enough without being too formal, with an interesting mix of nationalities visiting.

Hmm - after writing this I see it seems you can still book the Playa Real on the http://www.hotelesglobales.com site (Hoteles Globales bought the hotel from Acorn last year) - maybe there's hope...

I emailed Hoteles Globales and they confirmed Playa Real is open as usual for 2007, so maybe the Nikki thing fell through.

It's a real sign of the times that Ibiza is moving up market.

Last year there was only one five-star hotel on the island, the Hacienda. Now there's one open in Sta Eulalia and the "Granhotel" in Ibiza Town where the casino used to be which is looking closer to opening by the day. I hear the Playa Real in Talamanca is also going to be moved upmarket to five stars and there's at least one more five star planned for Sta Eulalia, I think.

I've lost track of how many there are planned. Perhaps somebody can tell me.

why on earth would someone who lives on ibiza be interested in the number of 5 star hotels? are you bringing all your family over at the same time?

I don't think El Hotel (the Pacha Hotel) bothers with a star rating. It's a bit like Pike's which I'm pretty sure is still registered as a hostal.

There are a number of reasons why I should be interested in the development of hotels when I live on the island, Stephen. And it could affect you too.

In a general sense opening six new five-star hotels in the space of a few months shows something about the changing nature of the Ibiza tourist market. Next thing they''ll want more golf courses...

Also, you can't have five-star hotels of this size open for just a few months in the summer. They'll have to conferences and so on through the winter. That means year-round flights are more likely.

But the main reason I posted the question is because I make my living as a journalist and the increase in Ibiza's five-star hotels is a story that I can perhaps get paid for writing about.

BTW Thanks Mackie for coming up with the definitive answer.

can we expect a wee article about it on pacha mag this summer? ;)

apart from the new one in playa den bossa, matutes is trying to open another one in san antonio near his rural hotel sa talaia (next to gala night). i suppose when driving along that atrocity they are doing from san rafael to san antonio you noticed by can tomàs the huuuuuge new road at the left of the main road..... well, now you know the need of that road!! :x

anyway, add to this the expansion planned for the port in san antonio (among other changes)..... just a matter of time till theres, at least, one 5 star hotel in that side of the island :!:

Just Googled Nikki Beach and it does look interesting. A bit of Miami-style glamour for the island.
The missus and I had a great (if overpriced) meal at the one in Miami. We didn't make it back for one of their parties but we heard they are quite a blast.

miami-style glamour :?: :? :?:

miami has no glamour at all -
miamibeach/southbeach pretend to be glamorous
... but its this fake artificial "velvet rope"-glamour - from the outside everything looks great, but as soon as you get in ... not much is left.
its like eating a hamburger at mcdonalds.: at first you want/like it,
but afterwards you think, this was ****ing crap - never again

spent 10 days in miamibeach in january, went to many "famous" places,
some clubs (opium, prive, space, mansion, gryphon, ink, etc) ... and 3 times to nikkibeach (including the 10th-anniversary-party on the 27th) ... its really not bad, like a bigger version of blue marlin.
i didn`t know that they are in the hotel business too,
but if they really convert the playa real - in this a little bit neglected area -
into a nikki-style-resort, this should be an improvement.

but:
ibiza doesn´t need "miami glamour",
miami(beach) needs more of this special "ibiza glamour" . :p

Nooooo, there is one in Marbella and it and most of the people that frequent it are naff, IMO.
I've only seen the Miami one. Though I can imagine how they might have tweaked the concept when they brought it to Europe. Tried to go all super-posh or something.

Yes it's like the same type of crowd as the London chinawhite type.

How are you keeping these days Morbs?

Fine, thanks, except for this left leg of mine which is probably going to turn green and fall off any minute now.

I've been to Chinawhites.... once. Could not figure out for the life of me what was so "posh" about a crappy basement club with even worse music. Same with Embassy Club.
