Footballer of the year

Hang on Silva. What rates higher winning La Liga or The Champions League? We all saw Barcs players throw there toys out of the pram when Chelsea beat them....

Ronaldino plays in a far superior team week in week out with Barca. So he has the time to do his flicks and show some flare.

I would like to see him play in the premiership, he can then really prove his so great. It is the best league in the world.....

Gerrard - The UNOFFICIAL Player of the Year 2005.

Joke of the year

Karlos - Lampard was instrumental in Chelsea getting to the Champion's League semis PLUS they won a domestic cup and the Premiership. I think that easily trumps Gerard.

no no no no no no no................everyone is barking up the wrong tree here. the award has and always will be based on individual performance and not teams. of course these individuals can help guide a team to success and as in the case of all the top 3, their teams won trophies.

but it is totally wrong to compare the success of lampard's team to gerrard's (partly because, man for man chelsea pi$$ all over liverpool - and that comes from a liverpool fan). cech, terry, makelele, robben (early season) were all major influences in chelsea's success.

this is about individuals and not teams and when players are given the award based on team performance it is wrong (unless it is clear that that the individual totally carried the team to success, like maradona at napoli), for example, michael owen won the award in 2001 on the back of liverpool's treble mainly cos he was our most high profile player = wrong.

Good point, grego.

Then I'd point out that Lampard played in practically every game last season without injury or suspension and scored a bunch of goals while being a solid defender. 8)

Ferd - I don't think Chelsea rely on Lampard's goals as much as Lampard is just a box-to-box midfield player who scores a lot. He doesn't have the skill of Ronaldinho (who does?) but his workrate is unbeatable. His position is also different from Xavi - probably better to compare Xavi (and lose) to Makalele, perhaps. But I definitely wouldn't rate Xavi or foul-and-dive Deco (who, despite his shortcomings, I like as a player) as highly as Lampard.

Xavi definitely doesnt play in Makalele's role, that would be either Edmilson, Motta or Marquez. But I do think Xavi does play different roles to Lampard though. Xavi has the ability to control the tempo of the game and dictate play which I dont think Lampard can do as well, and then Lampard has a better strike record.

Lets just say we agree that we're happy with what we got and wouldnt change it.

agree morb, lampard is a class act and deserves his place in the top 3.

he did get suspended last year.........think he missed an FA cup game.
160 games on the bounce is amazing in this day and age.

think the record for consecutive games is over 400 (unlikely to be achieved in modern era

I'd have to say the footballer of the year is David Beckham.

Why?

He is the only footballer I personally know of, therefore he is #1 in my mind. Everybody else is faceless and nameless.

Ignorance=Bliss

Eto'o

I hope Ronaldinho and Eto'o split the Barcelona/Spanish football fan vote

I think it's obvious it'll be 1. Rono 2. Lamps and 3. Sam.

Now I just need for Carragher to head in a goal or something. He's on my fantasy league team
