Festivals Vs Ibiza

I have friends that go to gigs in Belgium from Ireland and it works out cheaper than traveling from say cork to dublin :confused:hotels cheaper, flight is cheaper than train and concert tickets are way cheaper..

Over the last few years I have done a different festival usually somewhere in Europe. I'm fortunate that finances allow a yearly trip to Ibiza and also a few weekends away or another holiday. So I try to get in a festival that offers something different music wise. Over the last few years I have done Sonar in Barcelona, Giles Petersons Worldwide Festival in Sete, ATP festival in Reykjavik, Primavera Sound in Barcelona. I even went to Lollapalooza in USA a few years ago. All of these offer a much broader range of artists than you would get in Ibiza, so I get to experience loads of great music and travel to some cool places too. This year I am giving Suncebeat in Croatia a try. So for me festivals are about seeing/hearing a wider variety of music.

On a side note, referring to the many destinations being cheaper than Ibiza point. I've found that European dates on bands tours to be far more cost effective than the UK especially London. A few times I have bought cheaper event tickets and It's often cheaper and quicker to fly from here in Bristol to somewhere like Berlin or Amsterdam than it is to travel by train to London. Plus it's more of an adventure if you visit a new city.

I second this! So many festivals/gigs across Europe and you can often get to see bands/DJs in much more intimate settings than you would in the UK and often at very reasonable prices. Thinking more on the house music side of things - last year I went to the Diynamic one day event in May in Amsterdam (might also go back this year) which was good fun. I'm going to try the BPM festival in Portugal (based on a lot of good feedback on Ibiza Spotlight). I'd also recommend ADE in Amsterdam in October. You can't beat the choice and variety of DJs there. OK, its October in Holland so the weather can be iffy but its a great few days!

I love a good European festival! The whole idea of traveling to another country for a good event really appeals to me and often its not much more expensive than going out in London! This year along with my Ibiza trip ill be doing ADE only heard good things and thats already booked! Next year going to give Off Sonar in Barca a try and maybe even BPM Portugal. Really curious what people think of that so anyone that goes a good review wouldn't go amiss!

Im defo going bpm in Portugal next year (if it returns). Would be there this year if hadnt already booked Ibiza for the dates it takes place. I go Portugal at least once a year, its kind of my home from home.

And I f***ing hate shit sound systems too. Take SW4. I get sucked in year after year by the amazing lineups, but spend most of the event chatting to my mates rather than throwing shapes cos I can't hear the bloody music! I still kind of have a good time as I'm with my friends off my head in the sun, but it's a waste of money really. I'm not going this year, never again.

Glasto is amazing, I'll admit that, but it's a young uns game. Been there, done that, got the stories of climbing the fence, getting robbed and not sleeping for 3 days. Just the thought of it gives me the shudders now. Ibiza twice a year from now on for me.

I would disagree, lots of festivals are expensive but you cant say they last the same time as a club night. Any festival is at least 11 hours long and most clubs will not be open longer than 7/8 hours. If you wait to get your tickets yeah the prices rise but most first release tickets are around £30 and any big London club will be charging £20+ at least.

With regards to everything else have you been to Junction 2? Sound system was not bad at all, Venue was one of the best locations I have ever been and in terms of ticket prices my ticket cost £27. For £27 I got 11 hours of music, spread over 3 great stages with a whole host of amazing artists and a whole day out in the sun with all my mates! 2 hours was the minimum set time and only 4/5 DJs per stage. So I would say that is not bad value at all.

Not been to Junction 2 but heard it was exceptional. Exceptional being the key word there. Sounds like you're doing these one-dayers the way I would like to: getting one of the few cheap early-bird tickets and arriving early. For most people this isn't the reality, it's a more expensive later release ticket and rolling up mid-afternoon.

2015 was the final straw there for me. Far too quiet and now having to pander to a single person who complained from a neighbouring borough (Wandsworth) for this year. It's still a nice day out with friends but not worth it, especially when there's a free carnival at Notting Hill.

i don't think a UK-style festival with camping could ever really work in the mediterranean. too arid, too dusty, too many mozzies, you need green grass + soft terrain to peg into. better suited to the basque country, asturias, galicia or pyrenees.

but certain details are universal - the drums, the gear, the freaks, the tunes - but above all, the escapism

I could never be a hippy but more and more people want that kind of freedom at a time when it is ever harder to find

You need to get yourself to Junction 2. It really was exceptional! Best UK Festival I've ever done by far. The crowd was the best part everyone there was there for the right reasons, because they love music and this made a really good vibe. You didn't get anyone who was there for the sake of it.

That's how I do all my festivals personally I think the earlier in the day the better it is because its less busy and can soak up the sun!
