Far away holidays...

yes... the funny thing is everyone thinks that japan is so modern and futuristic... ha! ha!

japan may produce these funky gadgets.... but lots of things.. the fact that i got paid in cash... a 90 year old woman would put an envelope full of cash, throw it into her bicycle basket and deliver it to me... i couldn't use a credit card to pay for anything, bought my car in cash, ATM bank machines only open banking hours.. it was anightmare trying to tranfer bank funds... etc etcthere was only one computer with the internet at my place of work, only one of my work colleauges had an email address, there were only hole in the floor toilets at two of my schools.... when we did report cards we had to HANDWRITE evey single one.... no template.. the hospital in my town looked like something out of MASH..

dont' even get me started on the social issues in japan...

but i still say its an interesting place to visit, and if you stick to the big cities like Osaka and Tokyo, it can be very exciting... but out where the nice scenery is, it can be hard to navigate if you don't have some basic Japanese

if you're in the cities there are a lot of lights and you can buy beer in the vending machines in the middle of nowhere.... but ugly overhead wires spoil the scenery

but like i said, if you can get out to some of the islands, in the south, at the right time of year, there are some great beaches and fantastic scenery

I totally didnt think it'd be like that. I guess some areas must be so remote though that their still very backward. Just look at some places in the U.S...the richest country in the world but still very backward in some areas. Just look at Jerry Springer haha:lol: ;)

^^ yes this is true... I was what you would call an 'inakappe'.. someone who lives in the country... a real hick!!!!

and while my sitution was probably different than someone who lives in Tokyo.... I knew a lot of people who lived in the cities who experienced the same kind of stuff I did.

but yeah, a lof of people are surprised by the lack of 'modern appliances' in Japan.. i don't think these would be that apparant while on holiday, but when living there for three years, it is very evident..

ha ha... even though my town didn't have a place to buy food, or a bus stop there was a beer and a porn DVD vending machine a mere 100 meters away..

I know a guy that worked for a year as a teacher out in Japan to, and he actually described it the same way as you.

Its probably the same in most countries when you get out of the big urban areas and into remote locations
