Es Vedra

Ok here's a question for you locals/guru's, most likely a simple one for some of you guys but I have done a couple of searches and I can't find the answer.

What does Es Vedra translate into English? I have also tried using an online translator and it does not recognise it.

Cheers ;)

do you have an ibicenco-english/english-ibicenco translator? ;)

es vedrà dont mean anything in the local language but there are lots of different theories
about the origin and real meaning of that name. according to the historical investigator
pep riera it means horse!!

No I didn't use an Ibicenco-English translator, just a Spanish-English. Will know better for next time, not that I can find an Ibicenco-English translator online or anything :!:

Anyway thanks for the info 8)

I love that rock: very special to me....
I got engaged overlooking Es Vedra in 2002 at Cala D'Hort.
Very magical place.

Kind of the exact same spot where we sat when the "ring" came out.
At this point I should also add that the "ring" was made of a silver wrapper made on the spot as it was a totally impulsive engagement.
I did buy the proper ring when we got back from Ibiza. She even wore the wrapper for a while too! :D

i hope it's not a omen for you but that rock 'jetty' where you sat has now collapsed into the sea!

pacha cha that is soooooo romantic! maccie that pic is awesome, thats the kinda view im going to have once I get thilthy rich and get my little house!

Es Vedra Island.
This week the island in front of Cala D'Hort, which always reminds people of the science
fiction film "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind" &, which is claimed to have mystical powers,
was in the news as the local environmental officer reported on the state of the island. Es
Vedra was formed over4 million years ago by an earth movement, which left the 60.000m2
steep sided island rising 350 metres out of the 90 metre deep sea in this area of Ibiza. Full
of caves & rock crags, the island is apparently home of unique species of sea birds & lizards
as well as rats, rabbits & goats which were introduced to the island in the 18th century by
local farmers from the Sant Agusti area of the island who used the island as pasture for the
goats & hunting ground for the rabbits.
Apparently, the practice of hunting & going to the island to get the goats stopped in the 60's
& has led to a rapid increase in the population of the rats, rabbits & goats which are now
threatening to kill off the unique indigenous species of lizards & sea birds found on the island
& others which visit
the island to nest. Environmental protection laws now strictly protect the island & stop
unauthorised visits, especially as there were many deaths in the past from falls as people
tried to explore the island or rob birds nests for samples. However, the lack of human
intervention on the island has meant that the rabbit & goat situation is getting worse every
year & now the wardens are wondering how they can deal with the problem without
upsetting the delicate & unique environmental situation of the island.
