England World Cup Squad

I don't think SWP has done enough this season to justify a place so I have no complaints there - pure pace isn't enough at this level.

Campbell - WTF? Has Sven actually watched him in the last couple of games he has played. Four yards off the pace, awful positioning - we are in trouble at the back if he gets a game.

Walcott - speechless.

i think he's picked a great squad.

wallcott will be a revelation at the world cup.

SWP hasn't played enough or performed when he has played to be picked ahead of Lennon - who has been class this season.

bent hasn't performed when he has played for england before, defoe is too similar to owens style

owen fit though is one of the best finishers in the world.

Stand-by players:

Scott Carson (Liverpool)
Luke Young (Charlton)
Nigel Reo-Coker (West Ham)
Jermain Defoe (Spurs)
Andrew Johnson (Crystal Palace)

AGREE! he has many options this way, he have the best goal scoring mid in europe & he may only play crouch up front to hold the ball up for lamps & stevie g to run off with carrick holding & becks & cole out wide
QUALITY

deal!

dont drop him tho, cos he will sulk

yeah but he'll be different when he plays for a big club;) *ducks*

i honestly believe though...........if he just got played regularly, he'd be dynamite.................miles better than owen

I agree with what everyone has said.

Cant believe Walcott is in the squad after Defoe has been going to most, if not all England call ups in the last few years and is a semi-regular with Tottenham, at least from the subsbench.
Not sure what it is about Hargreaves, why does he keep getting called up??? Given im not a huge follower of german football, but he's done nothing whatsoever when he plays for England.

I'm pretty happy with Spain's choice.. Iniesta , Fabregas and Xavi all in :D (not official yet though)

I think its a brave and ultimately good squad. I think its clear that Sven is opting to pack the midfield with quality due to the shortcomings up front...if necessary i can see him playing Crouch up on his own, maybe with Gerrard playing off him (if owen isn't fit).

Walcott is a gamble but very exciting, if Wenger reckons he is going to be amazing then we should all listen to the man...wenger rarely gets it wrong does he? Also this kid isn't the most expensive teenage prospect for nothing...i think its a great selection for a conservative manager to make. risky yes - but it might pay off, so why not?

Lenon is definitely a better choice than SWP - but only on current form. SWP made the rod for his own back by joining Chelsea so nobody to blame but himself really.

Surprised more of the general England supporters still don't see the benefits of Crouch though....most liverpool fans think he is incredible at what he does, he has created so many goals for liverpool this season that lampard and gerrard could have a field day at the world cup with him up front. I say that as a Liverpool fan who was gutted when we signed him, but he proved me wrong over this season. He'll do a job thats for sure - i think most people just don't rate him because he looks odd.

Jenas and Hargreaves are weak though.

This is a shambles, a disgrace, a travesty, what was sven thinking in picking walcott a player who hasnt played one second of premiership football, how can you not pick king because he is injured yet pick rooney who is guarnteed not to recover, why put andy johnson as back up and leave out bent.

There are stupid, reckless decisions right the way through the squad with double standards all the way through it. baffling

I bet the scots and welsh are rolling on the floor laughing right now.

2nd round at best i think.

I agree with what everyone has said but lets be optimistic! I don't think there are any great teams around at the moment barring Brazil who will always be the team to beat! There are some strange inclusions especially Theo when we could of took bent who is a street ahead of any englishmen in the premierships leading marksmen!

The bottom line is we'll play too our strenghts which is arguably the best midfield in the world and if your looking for that extra something that might just lift us that lump of gold its Joe Cole...;)

Arguably the best central defense too (assuming the real Rio decides to make an appearance and JT is your starter)

There you Morbyd! I think everyone's judgement is a little clouded because of the Rooney situation! Yes he's top draw and yes he is the best striker we have but he has'nt scored as many goals as lampard or gerrard! Even John Terry chips in with 10 every season!

i think its an adventurous squad and sven, as he's outa here in the summer could have played it very very safe. well done for taking lennon (my/our player of the year) and theo who will surprise everybody. swp blew his chances when he swapped a career for money

lamps, gerrard and little joe will get quite a few goals between them

but sol and hargreaves are rubbish selections

if we are so short of strikers, wot about Robbie Fowler?

also: i wouldnt be surprised if mclaren had a fair say in these youngsters getting in

obviously its personal opinion but as a kopite, i feel sick that any liverpool fan is prepared to accept crouch as good enough for our club.......quite simply, he's not and no one i know who supports the club thinks that he is either.

he doesn't create hardly any goals/chances, his aerial ability is poor and his link up play is average at best (although i admit thats the strongest part of his game.................worst of all he hasn't got the football brain to play at the highest level.

if you want a target man to play up front for england there are loads of better candidates...............ashton, darren bent, beattie even people who wouldn't even be considered are better........harewood, chris sutton, kevin davies, carlton cole.

IMO most of these players aren't good enough for england..........but they are better than crouch.

In 1998 when France won, not ONE single goal was scored by their strikers...

Obviously, I'd prefer a fit Rooney (and possibly Owen) but Sven has loads of options with the squad he has put together. 4 3 3 or 4 5 1 looks likely imo and we should still beat the majority of teams we come up against.

Personally, i'd love to see Gerrard attacking full on for 90 mins and Carrick holding in a 4 5 1.

I also think Bent should have been included as the Premierships leading English goalscorer this season...not even having him on the stand by list is a joke imo. :spank:

no SWP?? 8O

Aint seen much Of Lennon tbh.....but is he better?? :?

And it makes me laugh when Sven says he picked Walcott on Wengers advice....Wenger who hasnt even picked him for nothing games...who has only so far paid £5m out of a £12m deal!

saying that, I think we need something of the "unknown" to take into a tournament, ie like Owen in 98 and Rooney in 2004, let's wait & see, Svens either a shrewd genius or he's completely lost it??
