England flags - Chavvy or Patriotic?

There's been a lot on the news laterly about the fact that the public have all taken into putting the St Georges cross up on their cars, hanging out of windows etc. Some schools and workplaces have banned this because they think a) it's racist and b) it looks chavvy.

What's everyone's view on this? Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with it. The world cup is in 2 weeks and I think its great people are supporting their country. Having said that I haven't got flags on my car, simply because of my own personal taste. But I have got a mini England kit in the back window and we've got a flag up at home :)

imho

it looks a bit pikey and im not 100% sure of the sentiments of those that are doing it. it's a sad state of affairs I know that you cant show a bit of jingo.........sorry patrioism without being labeled a chav or a neo nazi...but hey what do I know?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's ridiculous that you can't put the flag of your nation up in your own country. There is no problems with in Scotland with putting the Saltire up. It's not pikey either, it's just a way of joining in the World Cup fever.

Some of these PC rules are ridiculous.

Yes we live in a multicultural society but we also live in the Nation State of England. The St. George flag represents this and therefore can be displayed proudly anywhere in England if people so choose.

...

aaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!

The first time I went home after (gag gag) September 11, 2001, I noticed that everyone and his brother had an American flag on their house, car, etc. Drove me nuts... I just thought, who are you trying to prove your patriotism too? Each other? As if everyone around you wasn't American too? The uber-Republican redneck types seemed especially fond of the practice.

That said, it's a bit different in the UK, isn't it? You've got the Union Jack for the Kingdom as a whole, and then this St George's cross for England. I don't know what the politics of it all are.

I think the mini-kit in the window sounds cute, Becks ;)

The NATIONAL flag of England & the football team is the St.Georges cross. The World Cup is an interNATIONAL tournament. It's all about supporting the football team, bringing the country together under one flag, at least if temporarily.

I'm Scottish. If back home someone said we couldn't display the Saltire, even if it had been hijacked by the far right. They would get laughed at. Reclaim the flag back from the far right. Associating the St. George with the football team is an excellent way of doing this.

I agree totally my man, but I fear tis too far gone

nothing wrong with showing your patriotism.

but doing it by hanging little flags out of your car is dumb. if people were truley patriotic they would behave on holiday, ensuring they are polite and curtious to other customs and ensuring other countries had a good representation of english/british people etc.

there is nothing wrong with being proud of your country - but like someone else said - patriotism by flag waving stinks of a people who have lost their identity.

saying that, i will be wearing an england shirt through the summer.

I think the England flag is chav, only because of the people that have portrayed it over the past years. eg. football fans, chavs on holiday etc.

Here in Spain it is nothing chav to have Spanish flag on your car, go to a sports event etc. and is for patriotic reasons.

When I went to the Grand Prix last year it was really nice to be carrying the Spanish flag, wearing an Alonso tshirt... ....but I must admit....i would never wear anything with an England flag on.....:? .....not because I dont like my country but because I feel "yobbish" due to the way it has previously been promoted. Naff.

I must admit....i even let my other half sneak a teeny little Spanish flag on my mini! Viva España!

what about a saltire with "bannockburn" on it? ;)

That's more like it. And on the back of it, hologram pictures of Rab Burns, Sean Connery & Elspeth from The Family Ness.

Anyway guys. It's only a flipping flag out a car window. It's so insignificant I can't believe it gets such airtime.
