Drug Detection
On Tuesday the Interior Councillor announced police forces on the island, from this week, would have equipment available which was able to detect drivers under the influence of drugs. The only way to identify such cases until now was to carry out a blood test, which was voluntary. Maria Angeles Leciñena explained there would, at the moment, be just one piece of equipment on the island which would be shared by all of the different municipal forces.

Drug Testing
The Interior Ministry has loaned the island a drugs tester which is to pass from municipal to municipal over the next six months.
The Drager Drug Test 5000 is a drug detection system which detects six different substance categories simultaneously, within just a few minutes. Non-invasive, hygienic and easy to use, it is ideal for use in screening motorists suspected of drug consumption.
Lightweight and portable in design, the machine analyses oral fluid samples as a preliminary test for traces of opiates, cocaine, cannabinoides, amphetamines and designer drugs and tranquilisers of the Benzodiazepine group. Extremely sensitive, it is able to detect the smallest trace of drugs in oral fluid samples and virtually excludes interference from other substances.
The use of the machine is very simple. Once the protective cap has been removed from the oral fluid collector, the subject places the collector into his or her mouth. The built-in indicator tube will automatically turn blue when sufficient oral fluid has been collected. The test administrator then inserts the test cassette into the analyser which, after a few minutes, displays the detected substance groups via a full colour display and emits an audible signal by way of confirmation.
San Antonio was the first municipal to get its hands on the machine, using it throughout July although no results were yet available. It has now been handed over to San Jose, and in September will be making its way over to Formentera, followed in October by Ibiza Town, with the device being used in November by police officers in Santa Eulalia, and in San Juan during December.

even if the detection system is on the island since march, the police started using it last thursday night..... 13 drivers were stopped and 5 tested postive. the police brought those 5 drivers to the can misses hospital to double-check the results with urine tests..... each one of them will have to pay a fine of 450€ and will lose 6 points on their driving license (in case of being catched again driving under the influence of drugs they wont be able to drive for a long time). for now theres only one dräger drug test 5000 and the local polices of the different municipios on the island have to share it but it is expected that there will be some more in the future.....

The various municipal police forces on the island signed an agreement on Monday which ensured drug testing of motorists could begin immediately. The Balearic Interior Minister, Maria Angeles Leciñena, said all the Town Halls and the traffic department had signed the relevant papers to ensure the testing could legally be carried out, and that any convictions would later stand up in court.
This month the various forces will take part in joint controls across the island to ensure everyone is aware of the how to use the new machine and the procedures which need to be followed. Afterward, the results of the controls will be studied by experts who will then inform the authorities about the best way to use the only drug testing machine on the island. The Councillor for San Jose, Paquita Ribas, said safety on the island's roads remained a high priority, and that the objective was to reduce accidents involving those motorists driving under the influence of drink and drugs.
Following the meeting the go-ahead was given for the first controls to be set up in San Antonio. Five police officers from the municipal, accompanied by three officers from San Juan, (the next area which will receive the Dräger Drug Test 5000), set up two controls at the Egg roundabout and at the roundabout leading to Cala Salada, close to Can Coix school. Astonishingly, five of the first 13 drivers who were stopped tested positive for one of the six drugs which the machine tests, from cocaine to cannabis, with one testing positive for four different drugs. All were accompanied to Can Misses where urine tests were taken to back up the results from the new machine. All of those found guilty will be fined €450 and have six points deducted from their license.

can they test passengers?
Would not think so. The act of driving a car while under the influence of Drugs or Alcohol is where the offence takes place.
As a passenger you are not committing any offence, but in some countries knowingly permitting yourself to be driven by a person under the influence of Alcohol is an offence!

I've got absolutly no problem with these tests, got no sympathy for people driving under the influence

I would think the point systems are different from country to country. Do the points only count if you have a spanish lisence? Within EU?

They only count on a Spanish license, Spain you start with 12 points and lose them, The opposite to UK, If you are a tourist, They will fine you on the spot (and take you to the cash point to get it) If you are English and they realize you live here, You will probably get a ban, But they can not take your UK license off you, They just say if we catch you driving in whatever period, you will go to prison, and they get awful stroppy if they do catch you

Little bit too late IMO ....a friend of a friend died out in Ibiza last year after being hit by a car ...the guy had 9 different drug substances in him 
So all i will say is be bloody careful when walking about

This shouldn't even be an issue that people have to question. You shouldn't drive on drugs. The only question is when you have taken drugs and 'come down' when is it acceptable and legal for you to drive?
