Cream @ Amnesia Radio 1 Weekender - Jules Comments...

Judge Jules has posted on his website that he attended Cream at Amnesia last Saturday (Radio 1 weekend) as a customer. He has stated the following:

---

Along with my manager Charlie and another couple of friends we hit Amnesia at 2am, and perched ourselves on a terrace overlooking the very packed dancefloor. On the one hand I'm keen to make this column interesting, on the other I don't want to court too much controversy. Suffice to say the main room set from one of the world's most famous dj's was one of the worst I've heard in a very long time. Not only did he fail to play a single track that you'd remember five minutes later, he generated no atmosphere, mixed without passion and looked utterly bored. In a holiday environment I was astonished to hear not even one or two tunes with the faintest degree of familiarity, especially in a 5000 capacity club. I've been dj'ing a long time, and the way I've kept my career buoyant is by trying to remain tuned in to the mood of the crowd at all times (although clearly it's impossible to get things right on 100% of occasions.) I couldn't believe how removed one of the biggest so-called 'Superstar dj's' was from the atmosphere on the dancefloor. The minute the following (younger, hungrier) dj started his set the atmosphere changed out of all recognition, but by that point I'd been put on a downer, and we left half an hour later. My precious social night out spoiled by one of the most disappointing sets I've heard in a long time.

I looked on the Amnedia site and it said the DJs there that night were Paul Oakenfold, Armin Van Buuren, Fergie, and Eddie Halliwell.

Im guessing that the "younger, hungrier" DJ Jules refers to is his adopted son Eddie Halliwell, so does anyone know whether the superstar DJ he was talking about was Oakenfold (my bet), or Van Buuren???

Anyone got any general comments about this night aswell?

either way he was in the wrong funking room!

He should have checked out Yousef on the terrace. Thats where it was at. Jon Carter played a top one (as usual) as well apparently. I was there as well (apparently) but suffered the worst bout of memory loss EVER during that time!

I can't believe judge Jules has made these comments. The DJ he is referring to is obviously Paul Oakenfold who as was on directly before Eddie Halliwell. I personally loved Paul's set and it was full of tracks I recognised, so he clearly should have. It is quite clear he has problem with Mr Oakenfold.

i'm not convinced he actually wrote this. it doesn't sound like something jules would just come out of the blue and say.

Jules is entitled to his opinion just like anyone else but I'm surprised he's said this, I've always found Oakey a bit hit & miss & found the review very true of some of his sets but definitely not this one which I thought was superb. I also thought perhaps this was a hoax but have just checked out Jules's website & it seems genuine. Like someone has already said, perhaps Jules & Paul have some sort of issue with eachother. Be that the case or not, his criticism is very unproffessional :?

I can't believe he actually wrote that either...he is an intelligent bloke, and normally doesnt say anything that could be taken in a negative way.

I only herad Oakies set for half an hour, and heard a good few tunes I knew, and others I didnt but were very good

Very strange indeed :?

Oakies Set

Not sure if it's still there - but I listened to the Oakenfold / Halliwell sets on the Radio 1 player last week. Have to say, was impressed with both of them.

Have a listen and see what you think...

About the comments about making tracks 'memorable' - hey most of my best nights have been where i had no idea what was being played! You don't want to be listening to anthems every 15 minutes - otherwise it just turns into a rerun of a Euphoria CD...

ive just been taklkinag about this on another board. i recon people are being negative about him because his style of music isnt popular any more. personally i really liked his set,

I bet for allot of people in that place oakenfold is just a name to them, they wont have seen him and been blown away by his music like allot you you may have been?? Oakenfold is responsible for one of the best nights ive ever had.

And jules cant talk he is responsible for some of the worst sets ive heard, also just looked at the tracklisting for oakeys set and jules has some of them records in his bag so to say he didnt recognise any tunes is just plane stupid, last time i saw eddie in eden he cleared the dancefloor aswell.

I was expecting something not so good from Oakie, but I thought he was fantastic, as was everyone in both rooms for my that night, but Oakie stood out, very pleasently surprised :D

Jules running his mouth again, blah.

If Jules really means that he didn't recognize any tune then he must be living in lala land in the past few years, else how could he not recognize Southern Sun? :P
(even my grandma recognizes it)

Oakie played a couple of hours earlier at DanceValley in Holland for a huuuuge crowd and that crowd went mental.

/me loved it, ´twas THE set from Dancevalley this year.
I would have loved to do clubhopping with him, over from the DV to Schiphol to Ibiza to Amnesia and experience some of the vibe from that Saturday early evening again.

Can´t understand that DJ bashing. Looks to me as if someone is slightly jealous that he will never ever be considered to play in the same league as said other DJ, wether it was Oakie or another.

my 2 cents

Oakie was looking very tired and made no effort at Amnesia. :(

Eddie gave everything he got to people. For once there was a real star in DJ-booth of Amnesia :!:

I don´t say anything about the music. Everybody can have their own opinion about their sets. BUT what Jules said about these DJ:s doing their show - he was RIGHT. IMHO

From listening to Radio one, I agree that Pauls set wasnt very good but Eddies wasnt much better but it was more uplifting. Tho I went to cream in ibiza last yr and Paul Oakenfold bored me so so much. I was so disappointed. But, I agree that criticism to this extent is highly unprofesssional.

23 Aug o4 - 6 Sept 04 - cant wait!!
