The "pub", in the British sense, is somewhere people go to socialise more than drink. Watch the footy together, game of pool, game of darts, the pub quiz, entertainment (ah, yes, and bloody karaoke) and some grub to go with it. It's the centre of the community. When was the last time you had a knees-up in the church hall or the local MacD*****s??
The worry is they will use this as an excuse to run down pubs completely (the smoking ban culled a lot) to sanitise the nation. Yet pubs bring in £££'s for the treasury.
So what happens? People take their booze home, drink more (as it's cheaper for starters) and then start knocking five bells out of their nearest because they are frustrated and have had eight too many.
Just heard on the news that pubs "will be the last places to open".
At least in Spain the majority of cafes and restaurants sell a decent beer or wine but here in the UK many don't; so there's nowhere else to go.

Guess its about accountability so journalists can ask questions. Although that ITV Robert peston does my head in, takes ages to ask a simple question. Pretentious tw*t ?Getting so repetitive those briefings they should scale them down to 2 or 3 a week

Ah right, so he does well though. I still feel like I've aged a year by time he's done though! It's because he has a stammer and is constantly substituting words to combat it. He used to annoy me a lot more than since I learned that - does beg the question why choose that career when you have such an impediment, but fair play to him for making a success of himself doing it.
