Cocoon 2015

From what i gather it wasn't a case of him 'being off his nut and it being one big mess' more the fact his sound was far too melodic for a techno fueled crowd.

Having him slotted between Carl Cox & Sven Vath didn't work.

having seen the set on youtube, I think it was a combination of both. absolutely correct that the order of who played when didn't work, but then again, ricardo's sets in ibiza were really good last summer, and really, there were worlds between those and that one set in question at cocoon in the park...

Yet to see villalobos but would love it if he had a few dates again this year (and one of those dates coincided with one of my trips) would also like to see Gregor Tresher on a line up this season...

i saw him in Manchester on Friday night and he was absolutely on top of his game, hopefully he can keep that going into the summer

I said it at the time...generally speaking he isn't that great at festivals...short set times and weird programming with big crowds aren't his natural habittat. Put him in a dark club or a skatty afterhours though and his real genius will shine through!

I'd have thought that he'll be playing a few more dates this year after success last year? Last year he had to prove himself somewhat after the previous year?

yeah but this what makes his sound special :D

Or is it his antics behind the decks? People might be afraid to admit it, but part of his appeal is his whimsical nature and personality and they might just see him for that.

Not taking away from his music- I saw him at Cocoon last year and he was solid musically, but after 2 hours or so he went back to back to back with Zip and Sonja Moonear and I'm just wondering if he's in need of "help" or is he trying to push these artists

Probably, but I also wonder because I see these artists join him a lot on other dates and tbh the last hour in the b2b2b session, it was mostly Sonja and Zip doing work...

I still hope hes on for Cocoon this year. Some of the man's productions are stellar, so Cocoon guys if you're reading this, I like Ricardo! He's one of the guys I've always wanted to see and I lucked out last year with him on the bill. He's a Coccon staple!

one of the best sets of last summer for me from ricardo @ cocoon

Saw villalobos last year at Amnesia Cocoon too and it was one of the better sets I heard, simply because I remember it! Deep, dark, echoing, almost cavernous sounding house with melodic vocals... really fit the mood nicely.

But I can also see how a crowd expecting hard hitting techno wouldn't appreciate it. There's a time and a place for Ricardo and he's not to everyone's tastes.

Personally I dont understand the Villalobos allure. I think people yearn for him a bit in the states because he is never here as there was so much hype around his Time Warp Ny set and it was fine, but nothing special. Sometimes I think people like him for the idea of just seeing how much of a train wreck he could be, almost like the people who watch Nascar and root for a crash. I've seen him a handful of times, his selection can be pretty good and his mixing is mostly terrible, nothing legendary but fine at the same time. I would much prefer Zip for example to Villalobos though personally.

I think you either love him or hate him.

If you love him you'll let him get away with murder every now and then because you know he is capable of genius.

If you've never seen the best of him and then he isn't on it for whatever reason you are likely to never want to see him again.

I'm between those two. I don't love him because I know he can be effin' unstable and boy I've seen him doing some really lame shit. but I don't hate him neither because even though he had made me leaving parties in the past, on a good day he can be really, really good.

as a producer, he's definitely a genius. but I think we're more discussing his DJ side here.

He's just been announced to play Mint Warehouse on Ban hol along with Rhadoo & Nicolas Lutz - think I'll be attending that one!
