^^ It's a shame there's not a proper choice any more. The small venue parties are crushed and there's room for both - only places like Underground, Sirocco etc. keep going - and even there drinks are pricey now. Aura was one of the last remaining refuges and that's all over. Need some more like that to balance the scales a bit. Drinks were as pricey at La Plage as Space - but on some nights there were really good parties so didn't mind paying as entry was free. I don't really want to feel so manoeuvered into going to fancy parties when often the smaller simple ones are as much fun (sometimes more so).
There's still really good music to be had in Ibiza but it's just a shame that "free" enterprise isn't given a bit more breathing space in the clubbing scene - it's a pretty closed shop with a high entry price tag - and that goes for club owners / promoters as well as punters, one way or the other.
Whatever music is being played, in the end it's the atmosphere that leaves a party made or broken and many factors go into that. I've actually nothing particularly against bottle service areas - provided those in them are up, dancing and having a great time along with everyone else. Like they were at that Cocoon night with Richie Hawtin last year at Amnesia. It's different to my first choice of environment but not necessarily the end of the world. People going out to be seen or to say they've been somewhere or seen a particular well known DJ and then sitting or standing around bored with the music or each other and those around them are the true killers. That can happen in venues with or without VIP areas, but it happens a lot in those with them. If a venue attracts the right sort of crowd for a great party then it doesn't really matter whether there's bottle service or not, though I still prefer "not" ! The trouble is that often those venues with enough of these areas don't attract true party people with that certain spirit and it's this which is at the root of the dilemma imho.
There are various approaches to dealing with this, many of which are more contentious than having velvet ropes around the place (e.g. selection rather than advance tickets once a club is established). Those not admitted will often feel aggrieved and you can end up causing division and controversy. However, sometimes the ends justify the means. All a promoter / club owner can do is try to get the balance right and create favourable conditions in which hopefully a great party can flourish. There's only one way to find out if this one's going to light the touch paper - and that's to wait and see.
If truly great nights take place on the island then in the end it matters not where they take place or who puts them on, what matters is that they keep happening. And for that to happen the crowds who make those parties need to back their horses and go out determined to make the best of the time they have. With enough people adopting that mindset, this is actually all it really takes and that's the spirit that needs keeping alive. The venue is the least important input as long as there's reasonable space to move and a reasonable headcount. You can have an amazing party in a garage with smashed up windows just as easily as a fancy club. So get in the right crowd, dish up some great music and they'll do the rest themselves. VIP areas don't make this easier but they aren't the end of the world - as long as the crowd is right.
So let's wait and see what crowd Bomba draws in. That'll have as much if not more of an impact on the sort of place it turns out to be and the nights to be had there as anything else.
