Boiler Room

Some classic quotes ....

opinions? Anything to add, discuss etc etc?

Jim Young: And there is no such thing as a no sale call. A sale is made on every call you make. Either you sell the client some stock or he sells you a reason he can't. Either way a sale is made, the only question is who is gonna close? You or him? Now be relentless, that's it, I'm done.

I love that movie. Giovanni Rabisi is great, Vin Diesel is great... hell, even Ben Affleck does a decent job. Good story with all the necessary elements (fall from grace, redemption, reconciliation).

and lots of great lines.

Quality film - totally agree Morbyd about Giovanni Robisi and Vin Diesel - one of their best roles........ missed this last night

great movie..............unfortunately it is exactly like a recruitment i used to work for.........everything about it.........the job, the tasks, the image, the arrogance, the attitude, even the sayings are the same ("ABC - always be closing" and "motion creates emotion" got hammered in the workplace).

at the time i was so wrapped up in it all...........so glad i got though cos looking back it was a sh*t sh*t place to work.

Used to work at a company like that too - apart from the money side of things.

As for the film - i absolutely love it. Stayed up after a shift down the pub to watch it last night.

Two classic quotes (both in the same speech)

Jim Young: They say money can't buy happiness? Look at the f*cking smile on my face. Ear to ear, baby.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jim Young: Anybody who tells you money is the root of all evil doesn't f*cking have any.

The whole Jim Young speech is like a mantra to my life.

Previous to every exam or Job interview I've had since the age of 17 I've watched Wall St and/or Boiler Room.

I can do the whole Ben Affleck speech word for word, right from the "tsk dumbass" line. It's like it's my own "I have a dream..." speech.

Trivia - Jim Youngs speech is one of only, I think 2 or 3 scenes in whihch Affleck appears (one is the follow up recruitment speech) although inbetween the filming and film release, Ben Afflecks popularity rocketed, and most of the Boiler Room promotion was based around the fact that Ben Affleck was the main character, so Affleck got the arse and refused to do ANY promotional work for the film.

Much like Geroge Clooney in Band of Brothers (i think)

Yawn, it was better when the movie was called Wall Street.

I don't think Wall Street concentrates on normal working class people ripping of the average consumer on the Stock Exchange.

Wall Street is a far cry from a Spank Shop!

GlenGarryGlenross is far superior too both. But that's not the point, is it! :D

Yes, both films deal with the concept of greed.

On a superficial level, Boiler Room is also meant to look at the phenomenon of these shops, a criminal business. Wall Street was more about the cost of getting ahead in the legitimate business world by cutting corners.

Once again, Morbyd, your attention to detail is impressive. I am hungover, and had nobody to vent my aggression towards. But, I am leaving to Maui in 10 short hours!!!!

Wholeheartedly agree. One of the main points of Boiler Rooom is the type of people who work in these set ups. Blah..blah.. can't be bothered anymore. My point being, Boiler Room is completely differrent to Wall Street. To compare them is madness as Wall Street pees all over Boiler Room, from the script, director, acting etc! Boiler Room does have some cracking lines though!

i agree too and with what morb says. boiler room is like a kiddie version of Wall street in that (like the company i worked for like JT Marlin), the age group it concentrates on is 18-25, like Ben affleck says "he is 27 and one of the old ones". In wall street, gecko and anyone at his company are in a different league to anyone at JT Marlin. have to say though, at the org i worked at, it was the same, just full of young males full of "pis$ and ginger" as the guy who recruited me said. thinkin back he tried to base his whole life on that ben affleck character.

he was a d*ck :)
