"Big Sam" gone

martin jol is the man. And he can take robinson, defoe, chimbonda, stallteri, lee and bent with him.
Newcartle fans need a word with themselves though.

Exactly. He tried to turn Newcastle into Bolton, which even Newcastle aren't that, erm, 'Bolton'.
But do you think Big Sam only knows the long-ball game, or was he playing the best hand he could with the cards he was dealt? He didn't have a lot of resources at Bolton, as evidenced by the fact that his top players were all my age  yet he kept them punching above their weight.

You could argue that he resorted to a game of long balls and set plays because that was the only way to accomplish what he did with the resources he had.

And was Newcastle really moving in that direction? (that's a sincere question, as I haven't watched them play much this season)

When they lost 3-0 to Liverpool it was honestly one of the worst performances I have ever seen!

And they were comprehensively outplayed for most of the recent Stoke FA Cup match.

They were no better then before.

I doubt Sam has any other way - % age's. A good example in the paper today, training players to hoof it into the bottom corner on the basis you will win a few throw ins - long throw ins - a few of em lead to goals.

That will keep you mid table, but never any higher.

Everyone loves to ****ing jump on the wagon slating anyone, Newcastle being a big favourite. Even ****ing Merson who was probably off his nut at the time anyway was slating them big time. Newcastle are a big club, FACT. Only recently lost the spot of 2nd most support English team, constant big attendances, big city, big stadium, big players. PORTSMOUTH ?! What are you talking about man ? Portsmouth are the 2nd division club, granted, they are playing well, doesn't make them a big club. **** small city, **** small ground, **** old players, no big names etc. I think Portsmouth are great, but big club they are not.

The fact that BSA tried to change Newcastle into Bolton is probably true, but I don't think he did a bad job. The nail in the coffin looks like it was Stoke, if anyone has watched Stoke this season, they are a class act, obviously especially at home. A draw was a good result for a deflated mid table Premiership team. The Championship is stepping up a gear, it's only the top 3/4 who can easily beat good Championship teams as they are such a mile away from other Prem teams.

Everyone needs to pipe down, its so unbelievably unsportsmanlike amongst plastic fans whenever a team is down to knock them.

Heres the personals.

Morbyd, Toon outplayed Chelsea that match and were very unlucky to lose.

Agent, I was there too, worst performance ever.

As for attendance statistics, you show me any team who goes down a division and retains high attendances. Not sure of your point. Also, bear in mind Newcastle weren't a team who were high and dropped, they were a low team who rose. I would also like to know if these people who keep saying "**** fans" have actually ever been St. James, because I assure you they are not. I've been Emirates, White Hart Lane, Villa Park, all "decent" clubs who are never mentioned to have decent fans and Toon outsang them the whole game. I've been Emirates twice and both times the Arsenal fans were embarassing, same deal with Chelsea. My mate goes Chelsea every week and doesn't know what offside is, typical of alot of Chelsea fans.

Oooooh. Get her

It gets my goose I tell the.

My brother today said "Arsenal have only had one manager in the last x years and look where that's got 'us'". A typical plastic idiot stupid Arsenal fan comment of which I have recieved about 3000 in the last couple of days. Needless to say, I stabbed him.

c'mon jackson, it's a weak argument even the facts say you get the 2nd most. you can't use the fact newcastle happened to have a bigger stadium than liverpool, everton, man city, villa, spurs, etc, etc as rationale for this.

well i've shown 5 or 6 didn't i? norwich, ipswich, southampton, leicester, coventry, etc, etc whose attendances dropped sure but there remained a hardcore support.

the issue of fans singing is a tricky one. i've been to st.james' twice, once in 94 and then later in 2002. both times i thought the atmosphere was crap but then many home premiership games at anfield/old trafford are crap cos of the prawn sandwich brigade.

away games are different, when ever newcastle have visited anfield, they've never outsung us but i also know how it can seem when you're in the midst of the away end.

Why do you do it to yourself? Just tone it all down, please! I thought you went to some great uni and is proper clever or something?

At the end of the day, really, what else is there to do in Newcastle apart from go to Byker Grove, stand on the revolving dance floor of the Tuxedo Princess and/or watch Newcastle play football? I'm not saying it's a bad place... but... you do have to appreciate that the football teams get's such a crowd because the Grove or the Princess doesn't open 24 hours a day. It's nothing to be proud of, especially if you don't even live there!

When I went there was a mini shop/stall in the big shopping centre who's sole purpose was to gather signatures begging for Shearer to do one more season. I mean, how can you compete with a mentality like that?

The fancy bridge and Gazza was wasted on them.

(Sorry all the Geordies out there, I thought you were all really sound people when I was there though, couldn't be more welcoming etc ;))

Name a team that can outsing Liverpool at Anfield. Never been, but it's on the hitlist.

As for fans, that's not attendances, fans. God knows how they determine what a "fan" is and how they find out but Newastle always had 2nd place, now I think fourth with the new found Chelsea and Arsenal fans.

c'mon jackson, the poll was based on average attendances.

man united 1st, newcastle 2nd, (now arsenal), etc, etc

don't go all jonny on me and tell me you actually believe newcastle has more fans than liverpool, leeds, man city, villa, etc, etc. not only do those clubs have much greater city populations, they also (sorry to do this) have a history of success in the last generation or two.

and success is the best recruit possible for new fans, ahead of birthplace, genetics, pot luck, etc, etc

Whats with the Jackson bit, I'm sure it's hilarious though. Another thing you forget, Newcastle is a one team city, unlike most of those others you mentioned. That poll I linked you to was average attendances, but I'm saying I remember seeing a poll that was 'total fans' like and Newcastle were second. I'll take the hit on the success front except for from VILLA, the most underachieving, pointless team ever. I think they won the Cup Winners in like the seventies, that's it. However, that is still better than Toon ( except our Euro Vase last year 8) ). City havn't won anything ( yet ) and Leeds only did well in the CL for a couple years. Success overrides birth place and genetics by a long shot in most places your right, I'm from Bognor, 1000 fake Mancs per sq mile. However, in Newcastle I don't think it is an option to support Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea etc. irrelavent of success.

Anyway, coz everyone loves a barney this has spiralled into a Jonny-esque, we have more fans than anyone. I don't care, less fans the better, then I could get a ticket.

Why do you support them, out of interest?

jackson pollack. there is truly no way total fans can be calculated. for example, ac milan has thousands and thousands of registered supporters clubs cos that is how support is organised in italy. liverpool has fewer cos generally in the Uk we don't do that. the criteria for measuring total fans are too meaningless/spurious to be realistic.

yes, and newcastle also has a population up to or more than half the size of manchester, liverpool, birmingham, etc, etc.

trust me, winning the european cup (not cup winners cup) is the pinnacle of success and that will have given villa the pick of new fans coming through of the many millions that live in the midlands.

you miss the point anyway jackson. leeds/man city were all successful (to some extent) during the 60s and 70s and some beyond. that means that generation of fans continues more strongly and widely.

this ain't a barny cos i reckon you're not quite on another planet like jonny!;)
