Bank Dilemma

You've had Hair Dilemma, Car Dilemma.... now it's Bank Dilemma!!

Basically, I realised a couple of months ago that there was an account charge going out of my bank each month. I'd never realised before that I was paying it simply to have an ungraded account - one that has added benefits of house insurance, AA cover, mobile insurance etc. Now to my knowledge I've NEVER asked for this upgrade... for one, I am already covered on my own AA insurance, I dont own a house, and Ive never had mobile insurance - so why would I have asked for this type of account?

Anyway, I called Lloyds and asked why was I on this account, and how long had I been paying it, and could they downgrade my account to the normal free one! They've now downgraded it, but apparantly I've been paying this account charge for three and a half years!!!! 8O I can't believe I've never noticed it before! D'oh!

I spoke to my friend about it who is a bank manager, and she told me to ask Lloyds for proof I've requested this account, and if they cant prove it, to offer me a full refund (in all it should be about £300). Anyway, Ive since done this and Lloyds rang me yesterday to say they'd offer me a £100 courtesy payment to drop the case.

What does everyone think I should do? I could take it and drop the query, or I could carry on and get all the money I've paid back. The thing is, because Ive been paying it for so long I dont want them to say Im not getting any of it back because its been such a long time since the account was changed? But then part of me thinks, well the obviously cant prove Ive asked for the upgrade so I should push for all of it!

Confused :?

I do like a regular Miss Boo dilemma  ;)

I'd hold on for the full £300 missy, the fact that they offered you £100 straight away proves they must be in the wrong, banks don't normally go around giving you £100 if they think they can get away with it.

I had a similar thing with Orange years ago who were taking money out of my account for something I hadn't asked for and it took a while to get it all back but persevere and you will ;)

Demand it in full now and tell them it's that or you are closing your account. They will pay it.

GET THEM TO REFUND THE FULL CHARGE!!!

The balance of probability is in your favour seeing as how you didnt really need this extra insurance.

BANKS ARE SCUM... Im with cahoot now. so far so good. but then ive never ever had a problem with abbey.

First Direct are lovely...... staff are great, helpful (only prob is they dont do business accounts - you have to go through HSBC for that which is a bit of a pain but I know they will be looking to start business accounts soon....)

Go get 'em, Becks.

If they don't offer you the full amount and fast, go the American route and take their asses to court :D

Do you have class-action lawsuits in the UK? I'm sure this qualifies as you can't be the only customer they've done this too.

I know! I generally disapprove as well. But I think part of it is we lack some of the multi-level consumer protection bureaucracy you've got in the UK.

But back to the subject at hand, I say Becks should sue 'em :D
