Asian Disaster

I have one major gripe about the way the coverage of this hearbreaking disaster is covered..... its the way that they keep saying "oh such and such country/government/organisation has given the most in donations" - like its a bloody competion or something..... it doesnt bloody matter who gives the most, as long as everyone keeps on giving all they can..... for god's sake !!

Sorry - rant over, its just that I have finished reading a story in one of the papers about the youngest victim (a 59 day old baby and his fathers struggle to keep him alive during the tsunami.....) its heart rending...

I agree and i think the way they keep shouting $500M dollar this, $350M dollar that, may cause people to think why bother donating £5/£10/£25?

I think they need to put more emphasis on the personal and charity donations than the governments.

I also don't like how the guilt is aimed at western societies, yet i haven't seen any evidence of questions being put to most eastern/middle east countries as to why they haven't pledged anything.

agree with you both, the governments should be made to pay into the Disasters Emergency Committee like we all have and then the news should just tell the world what the DEC has to spend so far.

It's all too political and they are all trying to pledge the least they can and still look good, hence our £1M initial pledge!

A large number of middle eastern and Asian coutries have donated a great deal- in many cases giving a far greater amount in relation to GDP per person that many of the Western countries. Unfortunately the money being given by these countries isn't getting the same coverage in the papers.

In that case, who cares about the media coverage, as long as it's happening ;)

Because as you rightly pointed out above a lot of people have an incorrect perception that the guilt is being put on Western countries.

Important Tsunami info

Oh my word...what an awful couple of weeks
I spent 1 month on a beautiful island called Koh Phra Thong last January...an island so remote not even the local Thai's know of its existence.
It's made up of fishing villages and one main resort called Golden Buddha. They hold lots of yoga retreats there and I know many people that frequent the place...from the UK and Asia (not that nationalities should have any significance in this incident).
Entire villages (inc schools) have been washed away, often the only survivors being people capable of climbing trees. This is heartbreaking when I think of the kids that used to run up and down the beaches, excitedly waving the long boats in .
I won't depress you with any more details but it's worth mentioning that the lives of two good friends, Ae and Duan were tragically claimed by the second wave. Two people that were so full of positive energy and smiles for everyone that came their way.
Why am I writing this??? I know of a woman named Monica who ran the turtle conservation centre where I did some volunteering. She's setting up her own fund because she doesn't trust any of the national helplines/local appeals. Lots of these are being put towards helping rebuild resorts...admittedly there is a place for this but Monica's fund will go directly to the villagers who need it most.
These people are living in a small building off Kuraburi pier. Their entire livelihoods relied on the fishing trade and all their equipment has been destroyed. In short, these people are f*&($ed.
Pvt me if you'd like to donate some money to this deserving fund if you haven't already. :D

Not sure if we can official backing quick enough, but I will scan and upload the reciept for payment to the charity after the event.
Thats fantastic Buckley, what a star you are. Im sure everyone (myself included) who have people out there still missing, and everyone involved will appreciate it greatly, more than you will ever know
