Armageddon? Apocalypse?

....... can you remember years back, when you would be watching the news and the newsreader would say "And finally.........." and relay a bit of an upbeat story???

A week or so ago I was half watching the news when the newsreader said "And finally......... new studies have reported that the polar ice-caps are melting far quicker than first anticipated - they will be almost gone within 100 years" - now that scared me!!! 8O 8O 8O

Biggest natural disaster to hit the world on its way!

.... and in the meantime we can look forward to the one-day-expected landslide in the Canary Islands which is likely to cause a 300ft Tsumani that would probably wipe out southern england and effect much of east coast USA.

when is thar predicted for? I think that something like that will eventually wipe us all out

18th December 2024

Not heard that.

I saw a documentary about it a few weeks ago and the experts said it could happen at any time. One guy even went as far as saying it's now overdue.

I can't understand why our government is doing nothing in preparation for if it does happen. Then again, what could be done to prepare for such a disaster?

What does it mean? I never heard anything about the canary islands. And to be honest, I always found really funny when natural disasters have a date, specially when this date is in 20 years

What I did read was the melting ice in the pole north. And then you hear people saying that the global warming is a story invented by the ecologists to scare people

In that case just google "canary islands landslide" and pick any one of the other many sites.

Thanks Drew, it looks like I should start considering moving to Russia in the next years 8O

I think that generations that were brought up during the cold war were used to the threat of impending doom from the push of a button.

I know when i was at school I was a little anxious about it and used to ask my parents lots of questions all the time about it.

After the cold war it seemed that period was consigned to history - but now a new breed of possibilities have arisen through recent world events.

There has always been a possibility of us being wiped out by an act of god / environmental event, but this has never bothered me. (hey whadda ya do?)

It's the thought that we may be wiped out by the stupidity of man that pisses me off.

Amen. Very true.

Funny how terms like MAD (mutually assured destruction) are no longer really part of the English lexicon.

What a very interesting thread.

In my opinion it is defo media coverage that has increased not the amount of natural occurences. It must be said that the human race has enjoyed very favourable climatic/world conditions over the past 10,000 years that has enabled us to prosper. Life is cyclical and no doubt the ice caps will melt and evolution will take a different course again.

Maybe we will develop wings and take to the skies, and maybe that's where the mythology of Angels developed from.

I'm hoping that we end up mass emigrating to Endor and live with the Ewoks. If so, everyone must remember to take a cut out of C3 PO as the wee furry guys like him!

... The above insert reminds me of my Geography degree, well, without the Star Wars part.
