Colonel Daintry was a compulsive shaver. He had shaved already before dinner, but now he went over his chin a second time with his Remington.

I normally always have a book on the go, but have found myself caught up in all the Covid 19 stuff recently.

Got a few queued up on my kindle, think I’ll go for this one next.

I read her first book about the War in Chechnya and thought it was incredible. Also poignant as she was actually assassinated in Moscow around 2006.

Neal Asher, The Human (book 3 of Rise of the Jain trilogy) arrived yesterday. He does good fast paced scifi.

If interested I'd recommend reading them in chronological order as characters and themes carry through most of the books.
(Although can read them in order of publication, which works too, just some books are prequels as it where)

... something to laugh at

It could have been such a beautiful day - until Arthur Dent realizes that his house is about to be demolished. But that doesn't really matter, because shortly afterwards the earth will be blown up to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Dent can barely escape this fate - thanks to his alien friend Ford Prefect and the intergalactic world travel guide.

Just finished a book. Creation Stories: Riots, Raves and Running a Label by Alan McGee. looking for recommendations of any music related books/autobiographies/memoirs. Anyone got anything they would recommend? It would be greatly appreciated.

Well I'm going through my collection of old Ordnance survey maps. Let's call it porn for the geographer!!

YES!!!!!!

You cant beat a good Larry landranger OS 1:50000 map! Has to be accompanied by a Suunto compass though.

I have a secret love of maps. Particular favorites are of areas with extensive relief. Its great looking at grid square tightly packed with contours.

I like getting out on the hills doing a bit of nav and getting the mileage in.

Probably one of the first things I'm going to do when we get out of lockdown.

I've got the OS app for my phone and I like how you can download the maps to your phone. Nothing beats a proper physical mapsheet though.

Apologies to everyone else for my absolute geekiness ?

I'm glad someone else has got the map fetish, I'm into 1;25000 myself, can drool over them all night.

Such a shame that there's sat nav now, just wonder if kids in school are being taught map reading these days??

ooh. 1:25000 you say ? great for detail!

My kids don't get taught it at school unfortunately, but I will take them through it. My other half was oblivous to it until she picked up how to read contours. Then it sort of clicked for her.

Magnetic variation went over her head, but there's plenty time to learn that lol :D

Boring if you are not in business , but I’ve just read

surrounded by idiots

very good

I might give that one a look, cheers. Subjects like this interest me.

An American company I worked for used to do a basic survey on us, and it give us two colours that reflected our safety attitude. Sounds like it may be linked to this book?

I read 'Sapiens' a few years ago. Heavy going in places but very interesting stuff.

Yep sections everyone into a colour , so weird reading about how you act .
Like having palm read

And there-that water cisterna by the torrent-had been where the youngest daughter of Serra the blacksmith had drowned her newborn babe the very night before she departed for Palma to be a nun.

This, she continued, had been where some German hippies had established a witches coven in 1975 and had cast a spell that resulted in all the potatoes in the valley dying of blight that year. Tomatoes too! And all because the village storekeeper had refused to stock bratwurst and sauerkraut.

I'm reading a social psychology text. The course in social psychology is fast paced, so I'm reading it like there's not tomorrow! Lol. It's a four week online course. So I read the first chapter today. It's not my favorite to be honest. My brain is lazy... You might say it's hard to follow because the way the author is conveying information is a little overly complicated. He's just not making sure everyone can understand.

This is the book:

I hated the Secret DJ, not my cup of tea at all, he comes across as a massive bell-end (only my opinion).

Just finished Moby's second one 'Then it Fell Apart', great book, as was his first one 'Porcelain'. Both highly recommend. He got up to some mad sh*t...
