Convince a shop that sells Dermalogica stuff to give you a free tester sample of the tinted moisturiser - can't hurt to give it a go!
The Boots No 7 Tinted Moisturiser is really good and pretty cheap if you want to try one without splashing out lots of money.

MAC makeovers are really good - you get an hour's worth of the make-up artist's time, and can focus on whichever area you want - just getting your base right, or a look for a special occasion, etc. The cost is redeemable against products, so it's basically free. I'd go to the MAC shop in covent garden rather than a dept store - less busy, and you won't get passers by staring at you!
Watch out with highlighters, especially for photographs. I had a night out and applied a fair bit of benefit high beam, and all the pics came back looking as if i was made of wax. Not a good look.Just leave the cheeks alone, I find highlighters work best down the centre of your nose and right at the sides of your face.
