America

while not my taste, Miami is probably best in January= peak season, beautiful weather, packed bars/clubs/etc. I would not suggest driving north to NY - the weather can be quite bad even as far south as Georgia (snow/sleet/cold) and except for Baltimore/DC there rerally isn't that much to see on the way during the winter. IMO, you're better off going to Los Angeles or San Diego, renting a car and driving up the coast of California, or to Las Vegas (the desert is beautiful) then new york, then home. That time of year flights to NY from Europe/UK are cheap- spend a night ot two in NY, book a budget NY- LA flight - car rental/gas/hotels are pretty cheap on the west coast.

I agree. I went on a trip in 2004. Flew to New York, DROVE via the I-95 to Miami. Had a week there and then flew to LA for the final 10 days.

New York was by far the most enjoyable stop, but I chose only to stay 3 days when i booked doh! The drive to Miami - IS LONG AND BORING!!! It took me 2 days - about 10 hours a day driving. The interstates are long straight and covered each side with trees (in Virginia) and open space in the Carolinas...I would not recommend it!!

My advice, New york and then fly to miami or LA. I went to DC this year, pretty boring in my opinion but if you can drive there from New York or Baltimore (which I wished we stayed instead) might give you a bit more of the real America than just the 3 big cities!!

Muchos :)

from philly so i know the east coast well....miami is a great party spot would start there b/c once u get to nyc in january ure nipples will cut bullet proof glass LOL...

DONT drive from miami 2 ny/ny2miami b/c u will be bored/exhausted/and pissed...peeps r right just fly..plus if ure a minority (like me) u won't wanna stop in any of the small towns in the south, might run into some KKK type mind sets (trust me)....im not saying the whole south is like that but ure not from here so wouldn't know wut parts to avoid..

definitely if ure gonna take any road trip do it in cali..im just moved here last week and its beautiful..u can take the main freeway 405 from so. cal to san fran.. hope this helps8)

I'm a minority and have driven all across the south without incident.

But that's beside the point. These guys are right... there are some long empty stretches along the Miami-NYC drive, but there are some interesting stops along the way. If you go the coastal route, there's places like Savannah, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, South of the Border, etc. The inland route has Atlanta and Charlotte. Once you get past Georgia and the Carolinas then there's major cities the whole way (Richmond, DC, Baltimore, Philly, NYC, all the Connecticut towns, Providence, Boston)

Boo on MrMambo for calling DC boring   Great museums, a bit of history and some fun areas to party in (except for that closing to early part)

morbyd r u from the states..cuz i've been 2 ATL, miss, nashville, south carolina, etc.. most parts r good but if u go deeper u'll find that racism..im from the states and i know about it but ure right its besides the point...respect8)

I will still highly recommend the trip up the West Coast and then get a cheap flight to Vegas, spend about 3 days over there, and then fly to UK. In Vegas, apart from the ding, ding, ding and ting, ting, ting at the casinos, y’all can do the speed boats at Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, etc.

First of all, winter is good time as CA is not slammed with tourists. You can get to meet a lot of the local folks. The locals are also in a pretty good mood as the beaches are less populated, the restaurants and parking is more available, and for the surfers the surf is far better in winter than in summer.

Secondly, since the west coast is not as cheap to fly into as NY, Miami, DC or Boston you do not see as many tourists (especially in winter, and especially from Europe). The point I am getting at is why come all the way to a foreign country and see all the old faces again.

3-1/2 weeks is a good choice as you will get a chance to stay at some place and soak in the local atmosphere. It is far better than making a travel plane like a lot of us Americans do where they will do a West Coast tour of 8 days where they will spend 2 days in LA, 2 days in Vegas, 2 days in San Francisco and 2 days in Seattle and say that they have seen the west coast.

You can go back via NY so as to satisfy the shopping desire, or you can make a short trip later on and see NY, Boston, DC and Miami. DC is a must because of historical value.

Also big advantage for west coast compared to east coast is in'n'out burger pitstops

4x4 8) (droools)

I am glad that you enjoyed the In-N-Out burgers. It is a CA based company. I am more of a Carl’s Jr. guy, if I ever eat one, but most of my friends are In-N-Out fans.

When I was in Arizona I opted for IHOP rather than the In n Out Burger next door - BIG mistake!! :-(

Not to stir any controversy, with regards to racism in the US, I think that as much as there is a hype about the high degree of racism in the US than in Europe, in reality there is far more integration in the US than in Europe.

Getting over the hump of prejudices (racial, religious, etc.) does not mean that people can now get together and watch/play a game of football or work together or shag together as part of a personal anthropology project. Getting over the hump to me means that John Smith is perfectly comfortable with his blonde hair/blue eyes daughter, Jenny, marrying a Tyrone Williams, or a Nhan Nguyen or an Omar Mohammed. The exact same standards apply if the roles were completely reversed.

The reason why I use the example of someone being content when someone's daughter marries outside their race/religion, etc. is because (irrespective of the society) GENERALLY there is more of an acceptance when John Jr. marries a Lakisha Brown or Kyehee Nguyen or Fatima Mohammad. IMHO if people can get over the biggest hump, the rest will follow pretty easily.

We are not completely there yet as a nation, but I still think that we are far ahead of Europe. However, both US and Europe are far ahead of a place like Japan.

OK, back to selecting a travel route for BB.

Can I chip with the whole go to Boston thing. Wonderful city & people. Take the historical walk around (pick up a map) & visit Cambridge (alma mater of John M being Harvard Poly I believe?) for some fab & varied architecture. And fantabulous burgers.

BTW (thread hijack time, but I will be brief) Morbyd, can you recall a particular residential house in Cambridge - I will try and post a link to it, that is known as the best example of its kind in the US? Very different in style to the traditional slatted New England style? Have been trying to work out what its 'kind' is?! I know there are many houses, but this one stood out.

ohhh and go to the incredible food market - soo much to offer!

ya lucky devil ya!:)

Not sure about the house. Doesn't ring a bell.

Food market you mean in Boston's North End?

Exactly... not like Becks will have any issue
(Unless people pick on her for her accent! )

How long are you travelling for, Becki?

Well I've heard the Americans go ker-aazeee for the dulcit English tones, especially with a Watford twang

It's all TBC at the moment to be honest, it depends on money, work, whether my friend confirms she's going! It's something I definately want to do though.... hopefully for three weeks :)
