My fantastic weekend in Scotland for the football has ended on a sour note as my camera has been stolen from my bag and i believe it was a baggage handler or someone who has access to bags who took it.

Checked in today @ Edinburgh airport went through the metal detector only to be told i would have to go back and check my bag in as there was deodrant/aftershave in my toilitries bag stupid rules,Dublin airport doesn't have rules like this and last time i was in Gatwick they didn't either.

Anyway i check my small bag in,arrive in Dublin,get home,unpack my small bag and my camera/camocorder which cost me best part of €500 has gone,now i definitely remember it being in the bag before i checked it in as the guy took everything out of my bag when he searched it then i put it all back in and checked it in so the probability of it being stolen is very high indeed,there's no other logical explanation for it as the bag was zipped and wasn't open at all.

To make matters worse i have no insurance,i usually only take out travel insurance when im going away for a few weeks not a weekend to Scotland with a small bag which i brought onto the flight going over but fu**in Edinburgh airport rules say you need to check all bags in if you have any sort of toilitries/sprays,so i phone Edinburgh airport i get put through to this guy who says, "oh nothing was handed in,maybe phone back tomorrow and check again goodbye" :evil: very helpful eh,why would it be handed in when it was more than likely stolen,so as you can imagine im pretty angry right now,has anyone ever been a victim like this where they have left a bag(s) to be checked in and valueables have gone missing and what course of action did you take?

In future im gonna take out yearly travel insurance after this disaster,whoever has it i hope they have eternal bad luck thieving scumbag.
 
Ouch. Sorry to hear about that, Jonny.

Make a claim with the airline. If you do it right away, I believe you do have some recourse.

I may just do that mate im not expecting them to reimburse me though although it's worth a go.
 
Get this

A mate of mine had her camera on her coming back from Ibiza

It was when all the security was just starting to go crazy.. she got told to put anything in her suitcase.

So she put her camera in her suitcase- and locked it with a mini padlock.

She later found out someone at baggage control cut through her padlock, taken her camera, and rummaged through her cds, took a couple. But also found out that there were cds there that were not hers.

We guessed that they must have opened a few of the cases open and had a lot of peoples belongings all scattered before putting the stuff back that they didnt want.

Cheeky fooks!
 
I think that Ibiza airport must be particularly bad for this kind of thing,

I got back on Saturday and out of 4 of us, three of our suitcases had been opened whilst behind the scenes at the airport , 2 were deamaged beyond repair and the third had had 2 pairs of expensive sunglasses and some other stuff stolen.:spank:

All of us guys are relatively well travelled and none of us had ever had trouble like this before so Ibiza must just be a bit of a hotspot.

How do you know that it didn't take place at your arrival airport?
 
Opened luggage

If you are indeed all well travelled you should know that any article of hold luggage can be opened and re-sealed as part of airport security/customs.
This is ANYWHERE in the world...not just Ibiza.

We had luggage opened and re-sealed when we flew out of Prague on route to the UK earlier in the year, it's not unheard of....it's called SECURITY
 
Oh come on - read the comment! I don't believe any SECURITY checks involve damaging property and stealing sunglasses........
 
However aiport security are entitled to cut any lock of off your luggage in the process of a security check. There are several lock companies who work with airlines to provide locks that security will be able to open without cutting. Not sure hwo, ul have to chack t'internet.

I doubt it mate it's not even in my name and i doubt they would pay out,ive sent a strongly worded e-mail to Edinburgh Airport demanding an investigation,absolutely stupidity that you cannot bring a small bag through just because it has aftershave and deodrant for fcuks sake im really angry here and a bit upset over all of this.
 
I understand you are upset about your camera - but surely in light of recent events at airports you can understand why you are not allowed to carry aftershave and deodorant on to a plane...?
Could you not have simply removed the aftershave and deodorant and thrown them away??
 
Sunglasses

What is completely beyond me is just why anyone who is 'well travelled' would be putting expensive sunglasses in hold luggage?

Not sure what the criteria is for being 'well travelled', but we take two and sometimes three holidays a year and have done so for the last 10-12 years, and we are 'well travelled' enough to keep expensive items such as sunglasses in our hand luggage along with cameras and MP3 players.

Anyone who puts valuables in hold luggage needs to ask if they are also putting their brains in their suitcase....


Also....what planet have you been on over the last few months?, is it the planet that doesn't have TV news or newspapers?
The wonderful Pakistani Britons who were planning to blow up planes full of holidaymakers were indeed planning to hide chemical explosives in everyday holiday articles....with toiletries actually one of the stated explosive containers....So that my friend is EXACTLY why you should not have been expecting to carry deodrant and after shave in your handluggage...WAKE UP!

I'll ignore your hostile tone, which is uncalled for.

In response to your statement, if you're "so well travelled" then you know the rules on liquids and carry-on size are being inconsistently applied internationally at present. If you board a plane in the US or UK, then these restrictions are more strictly enforced. If you're boarding in other countries, they are not. Even then at the same airport, there are variations.

In the past 6 weeks I've been in 8 airports in 3 countries. On one trip, I had a computer bag that, with cords & cables and stuff, was larger than the new reduced-size carry-on limit (but smaller than previous standards). I was allowed to take it on no problem in one direction (to the US) and told to take some things out to reduce its size in another direction (to Russia).

On another trip, I ended up carrying on a 2nd small bag (which I'd originally intended to check but didnt). That's right - 2 carry-ons, even with all the "heightened security".

As an aside, when I took that 2nd bag through security, I'd forgotten that it contained toothpaste and deoderant. So I threw them away and kept the bag. Sounds like what Jonny should have done.

But that's hindsight. Most important question now, Jonny, is did you call the airline!? You can make a claim but it's gotta be done quickly. If so, you have a good chance of compensation. If you wait a couple of days, it's unlikely.
 
Luggage

Thing is the original post was in regard to Edinburgh airport which is a UK airport therefore operating under UK Department of Transport Regulations.
Therefore anyone using Edinburgh Airport was doing so under the UK Airports Emergency regulations which were impossible to miss in local and national press.....lets face it, it was spread over every newspaper front page and on every news bulletin for a couple of weeks.
Also every UK airport was issued with large posters that were undoubtably plastered over the entry lounge of every airport over here, I know they were at Exeter airport on Sept. 2nd.....you would have to be blind to have missed them, the posters made it plainly clear that toiletries and indeed any fluids were not allowed in hand luggage.

And call it hostile as much as you like Bombay....anyone who chooses to put any valuable items in hold luggage that would easily fit in hand luggage really hasn't stopped to think about it have they?
Theft apart, it's so easy to have a suitcase broken open in a hold or by falling off of a luggage trailer it's just silly to carry valuables in a suitcase when they will fit in your cabin luggage.
 
Yes thanks for that, I am well aware of current airport restrictions. Its not your point I am disagreeing with, it is the tone of your messages,there is no need to be condescending or sarcastic and tell people to wake up or that they are putting their brains in their suitcase and use CAPITAL LETTERS - which the girl who sits next to me at work tells me means you are shouting. The guy is looking for help, not a ripping into.....

If you notice it was Morbyd who called your tone hostile. I am merely agreeing with him.......
