I believe the traveller's journey originated in Ireland. It appears that certain things were allowed in his carry-on when travelling to Edinburgh that were not allowed on the way back. He might have surmised, and not completely illogically, that things he was allowed to bring onboard the cabin when travelling to Scotland would also be allowed on the way back.Thing is the original post was in regard to Edinburgh airport which is a UK airport therefore operating under UK Department of Transport Regulations.
Also, see my note above about inconsistent implementation of this rule... and I was talking about Heathrow, arguably the center point of UK air travel.. Jonny was travelling from a smaller regional airport.
