50 top clubs in the world

To clarify:

I was one of the 600, and the question was merely "Please pick your choice of 3 for the World's Best Club".
No criteria was given, so I guess it could have been based on dj experiences, punter or both.
I used both and voted for my venues based on atmosphere and the experiences i've had in them, not particularly that they are aethestically the best clubs in the world, or the most well known.

It's bound to stir debate as we've all had different experiences in these places, it's personal opinion.

(for the record, I voted for The Arches at number one and CocoonClub Frankfurt and The Cross just *might* have been my other two ! :p )

"600 International DJs" - they're including Jocks in that?8O

(Soz Stu! )

Sorry Stu, I should have wrote "599 brain-damaged djs and one in possession of his full faculties".

This headline-writing thing is tough isn't it?

Indeed. Guess you haven't got a contract for that:lol:

The list looks heavily weighted to western Europe in general and the UK specifically.

Not that these aren't the best venues (haven't been to most of them) but I've seen better clubs than some of those listed (in terms of atmosphere, design) in E. Europe and even the US.

Are we talking only about which clubs get the best DJs to show up most regularly?

Or are we talking about club design, sound system, atmosphere, etc? Obvious from Stu's post that this wasn't really the case.

I'm also curious as to the geographic breakdown of these 600 DJs...

my guess is that 500 out of the 600 djs are from england.

well that wouldn't be entirely unjustified, as DJ Magazine is a British-based Magazine, and many of the top dj's on the planet are British.....

Matter of perspectice. I think it's unjustified if you want to talk aboutthe best nightclubs in the world.

True, many of the best known DJs on the planet are British.

I've met/heard DJs in other parts of the world (mainly E. Europe) who are just as good but there's no avenue for them to get out on the world stage.

For example, you rarely see Ministry or Fabric inviting over a top Russian DJ to play a gig, but clubs here invite top UK DJs all the time. I, for one, frequent those events, but I've also got some favorite local residents who you've never heard of.

It's also a matter of promotional expertise and access to studios, labels, etc.

I look at a club like Turnmills. Great parties but it's basically a basement. Ministry of Sound is a warehouse. They're great for the parties, sound system, and atmosphere. Nevertheless, I've seen better places from a design point of view, some of which also had good sound and atmosphere.

Supercharged in Brighton is a label and a club night, not a club. Speaking of institutions in the South East of England, where is the Concorde 2?

:D :D

Turnmills is average. The Arches is far better in both reputation and design IMO. Did Tall Paul get 10 votes?

Fabric, the End, Space, Dc10 and the Arches would be my top 5.

Excellent choice. However, I would take out Fabric (too pretentious) and place Tresor/Globus - Berlin. I'd also put Bora Bora in there somewhere, but it's not really a club as such.

In fact, feck it! Bora Bora for general atmosphere and actually having space to dance in (i.e. the sea!) if you so wish!

I agree with what you say, but I was responding to the comment that most of the dj's asked come from England, not who is better, more well known etc....

Is it not true that many of the World's top dj's are British?

I counted 8 out of the top 20 from the DJ Mag Top 100 list alone......

I don't doubt you brits are la creme de la creme re djing but that sentence sounded a bit too patriotic or call it however you want.

it wasn't patriotic at all, it was merely stating a fact.

That's the point I was making earlier but then I started rambling...

many of the World's best known DJs are British

And btw, is it a reliable source, an independent source or it's just a brit magazine? 8O

we could be here all day arguing the merits of International dj's, who's better, who pulls a bigger crowd, who is more widely known etc, but I stand by what I said; many of the World's top dj's are British.

Which, going back to the original point of all this, perhaps explains why there are a lot of British-based clubs in the poll !
8)

ehem, I really don't doubt you brits are great dj's, honestly. THe only thing I said is that that sentence of yours gives the reason to this other sentence by ferd. See? ;)

Maybe that true, but its been known for him to defend everything thats British vehemently
