2004: Worst year for me.

You have to realise that there is so much happening in Europe this year.........you just had Euro 2004 and the Olympics are coming up, so there are alot of huge events that will affect numbers at Ibiza this summer. The timing of those events will also mean that there will be peaks and troughs at different times this summer in Ibiza with people taking their holiday's at different times than they did say last year.

Clubbers are also into sport, but these events are more than just sport, they are really huge festivals.

As far as keeping it interesting, i think people have to open their minds a little and try different club nights and different styles of music. To me, that's what Ibiza is all about........not just going to 5 house nights in a row, or 4 trance nights in a row or whatever.

I was there during the same period and I also noticed there were fewer people than last time I was there in June 2 yrs ago (Sept '01 and '03 were definitely fuller). People working at the bars conveyed that same opinion.

Nevertheless, I disagree about a lack of atmosphere. I thought Space opening was great because it Wasn't overpacked on the terrace. Same thing with the Pacha nights (openings of Subliminal, Sanchez, Kleinenberg). La Troya opening was a blast.

El Divino's Defected weeks 1 and 2 could have been fuller (they close off part of the club to push the crowd to the center) but there was still a good-natured crowd.

I was on the island for 5 days until July 7th and thought it seemed busier than usual at that time of year. Space terrace was rammed, Bora Bora was heaving and Ibiza town at night was really bustling. We ate at La Oliva and it was packed too. And Smokin Jo and Tim Sheridan's Nasty Dirty Sex Music party went off bigtime - can't wait till I go to that again in August! :D

That could be it, maybe you've changed.

I have this year, im not so bothered about the clubs anymore. There will be a few faves i go to such as Hed Kandi, Defected etc but ive realised that at the moment id much rather go to a bar / have a nice meal in a nice setting with some good company that hit the clubs every night.

I may not even do Space yet as i dont think i'll like the music :?

yeah right- groove armada on the 12th ;)

Each year we chill some more.

Maybe it wasnt the places, but the people?

Sunset bars for me this year. Roll on September.

I take it all back: it was the comedown talking.
Looking at my piccies, I can officialy say:
"I HAD A F$CKING WICKED TIME!!"

God its amazing how your head can play games with you innit?!?
I think the sheen and excitement has worn off slightly, but it WAS still amazing!
Proper review to come.

This threads amazing! I was paranoid, depressed etc... on Sunday night and worrying I didn't enjoy it enough :?

I will admit there is of course not going to be the same excitement as your first or second years, but each time I think back about my two weeks I smile. I KNOW I had a wicked time.

I have even just decided I will be going back for a long weekend in September as could not handle reading everyones reviews etc on here. Won't be doing as much clubbing etc.... but as said there are plenty of good bars and restaraunts!!! :P

As for the Funky room where was everyone?!? I've had bigger parties in my living room. Such a shame as I love throwing some shapes in there with that nice party feel the room usually has.

Probably avoiding the drug fuelled "shapes" you were pulling.

Personally, I find that each time is better than the time before, as more and more of my friends discover Ibiza's charms and make a regular pilgrimage there once or twice a year to forget about the rat race that is London. Having been a regular clubber since the early 90s, I am now the grand old age of 33 and love absolutely every bit of the island, from the beaches to the clubs, restaurants, markets... I could go on and on talking about my fave subject! Last year I even got myself into debt by buying a flat which is the best thing I ever did, coz now I have my very own piece of Ibiza!

this year was the best time I've had, first time I've had a fortnight in June and it's definitely the time to go for the major clubs, although it's too early for some of the smaller ones. I think we went out 8 or 9 times not including Bora Bora and the only downers were Hed Kandi, which was pish, and the security in Pacha.

The secret to maintaing the excitement is to try and get to the private villa parties and then move onto the bigger clubs with everyone you've just met. Normally this results in some VIP action.

God, just thinking back to some of those villa parties brings a tear to my eye.

Clara,

I found out about the villa parties I have been to through friends in London who happened to know the people involved. Sorry, that's not much help really is it?! The one I went to last year was stopped early by the Guardia Civil who said the noise levels were too high (they were definitely not for the record). My partner who has DJed for Manumission in the past says another way is to get friendly with the workers and bar owners who normally know about the secret parties... :D

Hello Clive by the way, wondered when you would put your comment on here.

I still think that on the whole the Island becomes a better and better place to visit. The government has done a massive amount to tidy the place up and efforts to cut back on the slightly less attractive aspects (West end beer boys & girls etc) seem to have paid off. I think the increase in prices over the past few years has a lot to do with it too as Ibiza is no longer a "cheap" option.

I thought there were less looky lookys this year and those that were about seemed to be keeping a low ish profile.

Thankfully the number of PR's this year has been reduced and also seem to be far more organised. Having them licensed is a good thing I think. Additionally I overheard some prospective PR's being interviewed for one well known bar and it sounded like the deal they got wasnt too bad either. You still aint ever going to make decent money by PRing but I guess you could live on it - just. Hopefully with fewer about, and working "legally" there will be less who have to find other more risky way of funding their summer in the sun.

I have to agree with Clive over the sunset strip bars. I'm not totally anti R&B/Urban and I know its really popular right now but for me it just doesnt work. I come to Ibiza to escape urban life not have it thrown right back at me in musical form. Sorry guys but there just isnt enough sun in this type of music for me.

Another word about the strip.
Savannah - sort yourselves out. Had lunch there which was lovely, went back a couple of days later for dinner only to discover that the menu (which some years back was really quite good) had shrunk to just a few dishes. Both MrsW and I had distinctly average food and was treated to some of the most shocking service I have ever encountered (and I work in London). For no apparent reason they seem to have employed someone in the evening who was attempting to do a Maitre D's job and scowled when we just turned up and chose our own table. It simply isnt necessary.

Bar M was totally on form. Top quality music every single night we went and even rescued my night with the Ministry BNO pre party after having been subjected to R&B at Coastline earlier. Well done guys - Im loving the suspended glass floor and even like the glass that encloses the bar after 12.00.

Itaca - I like Itaca. A few years back they were nice enough to let me DJ for a few days there so for that I am greatful. However, although they have some terrific nights there I still feel it has a slightly hit and miss quality to it. Cant put my finger on it exactly but it does have off nights.

Bay Bar - Absolute renaissance for this place. Nice to see they have stopped trying to be BarM without the buzz and have developed a real style of their own which is helped greatly by the outdoor dj booth. Big shame they still have to keep the volume down soooo low tho. Nice staff and nice unfussy food too.

Didnt spend much time at Kanya, but looked to be rocking both times I went past. Maybe I went at the wrong time but Kasbah looked dead - I did nothing to help revive it.

Kumharas. Sorry, dont know what all the fuss is about.

Clubs - Just did two this year (over 30 and getting fussy). WLS superb. Proper house for proper clubbers. Never miss it. Who cares what they have done to the inside of Space its still one of the best clubs in the world. I will always happily part with a months salary to get drunk while bopping about on the terrace.

Deep Dish/Yoshitoshi. Arrived about 1.00ish totally forgetting the nothing happens in pacha til later and walked round feeling as though I had broken in and was listening to the DJ having a practice before the club opened. Tunes however were spot on so sat back, handed over huge sums of money for drinks and soaked up the sounds. Deep Dish themselves I thought were blinding. First half was great then went on to the terrace for a chill and got chatting to some VERY t*wtted Swiss guys - hilarious.

Back inside for the second half and caught up with Mrs W who had gone in earlier. Now I didnt think it was that bad, but it was clear that the music had gone off on a complete tangent and apparently there had been a few "questionable" moments in the choice of tunes and mixing. By this time I was plastered so listened to a bit more then called it a night. er...7/10

KM5 - As ever, simple food cooked to perfection. Great staff, great atmosphere - potentially my favourite restaurant in the world. One day I will be rich and buy the place. (Slight faux pas both of us turning up to the White party dressed in black - how was I to know????)

Curry Club - Thanks Clive for taking us there (twice). I have always thought having curry in Ibiza would be disappointing. How wrong can a person get. A delicious new find - will be back there for sure. Huge Poppadoms.

KFC San Antonio. At 3.00am there is a god and his name is Colonel Sanders.

Villa Mercedes - Jazz? (nice)

A note about Manumission. We didnt go (as it hadnt opened) but saw the build up. Now I have been - several times - and enjoyed it thoroughly when I did go. This year though I think Mike and Claire et al have properly lost the plot. Now I know that the Mish has always teetered on the brink of camp burlesque, but it just strikes me that it has sort of become a caricature of itself.

I do admire the the idea of trying new things but I just cant see rock and rap working in that environment. I am sure I will be proved wrong by 9000 clubbers each week.

Random moment - being acosted by a typically arseholed Brandon Block who shouted C**T at everyone and then apologised to Mrs W claiming he hadnt noticed I was with "a lady" then went for a piss up against a palm tree.

Overheard comment on the ferry across San An Bay from girl talking to her friends (All Chanel sunglasses and Burberry skirts - euch!)

"Yeah tonite we're going to El Divino, its the biggest club in the world and holds 10 thousand people"

Get your facts right luv.
