Writing / Journalism

New Job Dilemma!!!

Heheh, well not really, but just a general question.

I really want to start doing something in journalism, some kind of writing. How can I get into this kid of field? I don't expect to get paid for it at the moment, I'd be happy just doing a few pieces for magazines / websites etc, but how would I go about contacting them? And who would I ask?

Any advice would be much appreciated :D

One of my friends was desperate to write for a motorcycling magazine and they just hounded them for a job, until it became embarrassing

But they got the job in the end. Approach a company that you would love to work for and see how it goes.

All my friends are journo's. You gotta build up a portfolio which can only be done by doing work experience ( unpaid, mostly ) with anyone and everyone. Try to specialise in one field, i.e. radio, tv or print and approach anyone and everyone. People will take you on as it's free. Only problem is getting a paid permanent job, especially as most look for either a journo or PR degree. Good luck.

P. S. - Blogs are a must my friend also just applied for a job and got rejected on the basis of not having a MySpace. Mental.

My friend did exactly the same thing and enrolled on a really good evening course...she then got work experience with a naff property supplement and has ended up at country living or something. (can't remember the exact publication)

If you're interested I'll find out more about the course.

Bec, I think there's a column in The London Paper (one of the free evening papers) that's open to different writers every day.

I was just going to type the exact same thing Miss G - it is the London Paper - you have to write 500 words or something on any topic you want and then if you get chosen the readers can text in whether they want 'more' of you or whether you are a 'bore' - def worth a go Bec it's all good practice.

I've done it already, Im waiting on an answer :D

Yes pls, mail it to me and Rach ;)

Also good idea to write to lots of free/local publications - nobody is gong to walk into a job writing for Cosmo or whatever and most journalists start off with local papers and free publications.

Ok sent it now. I wrote it this lunchtime, my original idea was one about getting back from travelling and wanting a career change etc, but I was eading the paper last week and some other bint wrote almost exactly the same thing so I had to change my idea... s1ag! ;)
