Work Dilemma!

Ok, so I've started at this new company just this week. Loving the people, the hours, the relaxed policies etc etc. HATING the fact that the Finance Dept are situated away from the rest of the agency, and an extra gripe is that my boss doesn't like music being played while she works. I'm finding this really hard to deal with, as I always have had the radio/cd's on while I'm working!
I was thinking of asking if I would be allowed to listen to a walkman in the office, therefore both of us would be happy.

Do you think it would be ok to ask this, even though I've only worked here for 3 days :?: :!: Or should I wait until I'm a bit more settled in before telling them my demands

I assume your new boss will want to sit down with you at end of first week/first fortnight to see how you're getting on so I'd bring it up then. Bring all the positives up first and how much you're loving the job etc etc and then say ways in which you could find it more enjoyable, ie you NEED music to work to :D

Yeah be careful how you approach this one because some people find personal cd players and stuff like that quite rude and it means you can't communicate with the rest of the team (if there is one) - I'm sure you can reach a compromise if you are very careful!

Nitefly, it's a WOMAN! See original post!

Yeah I dont want to seem rude... maybe I'll wait a while before I approach it

you never know

anyway, im kinda having the same-ish sort of dilemna. I want to go for a fag break, on my tea break, but I dont wanna ask my supervisor. See, normally, this would be a no-no in the main office, but while training, we are based in smaller office, more relaxed, above the towns main shopping centre. i could quite easily nip to the front door in 1 minute and have a quick fag, instead im having to go about 4 hours in the morning without one. so far, ive decided to keep my mouth shut, but im finding it difficult to cope with the new nicotine routine. I know what its like to not have music, my ex girlfriend tried to deprive me of music every time we spent any time together. I'd be weary, is she ok or does she look a bit psycho? Personally I wouldn't bother, being so soon into the start of your new position. You don't wanna rock the boat, but then, if you get an informal "how well are you doing" kind of interview it might be an idea to mention that you find the deathly silence a little intimidating and you used to prefer working with music, and suggest the cd player then. see, the only reason im typing such a lengthy response is im on my tea again, yet i couldve ran downstairs, had a cigarette and been back up in the lift in the time it took me to write this.....urghargh!!!! good luck tho...
