Im heading across the country tomorrow to act as best man at my brothers wedding, which means only one thing...

SPEECH 8O 8O 8O

I'm in the process of putting the finishing touches on my little talk, and im off work from now till Monday so it's gonna be a great weekend. So spare a thought for me tomorrow at around 6pmn when I'll be standing up SHITTING MYSELF in front of 100 odd people. I don't usually mind doing talks, but i think its more the thought of having to crack jokes thats making me nervous, Grant's (the groom) mates are known for their banter, and they'll crucify me for my poor humour but I'll give it my best shot anyway. Anyway, heres hoping no tumbleweed rolls past as Im speaking!

Good luck! I'm sure you'll do fine ;) Just have a few drinks beforehand and I'm sure the guests will love you :D

I had to do this to a wedding reception of over 200 and was scared witless - not only was I the best man, I was also the MC 8O

Just remember everyone there will be hoping you succeed, and WILL laugh at your jokes, so go out and enjoy being the star of the show!

I did a public speaking course a couple of days ago which was excellent. They used acting techniques to help project a sense of confidence, even if you're really nervous...

- Breathe from the diapragm: breathe in for 4secs and out for 8, then in for 4, out for 16, then if you can manage it in for 4, out for 32secs. That will help your voice and make you more calm. Also important to stop bewteen sentences (most people say 'and' 'umm' 'basically' etc in between sentences because silence sounds so loud in a public speaking situation) instead, stop, listen to the quality of the silence (the more quiet it is, the better people are listening), and take a deep breathe.

- Try to imagine you're talking to your mates in the pub. This helps to a) give your speech more of a stroytelling quality, b) helps you to project your voice better, c) helps you relax.

I've got plenty more tips - if these seem helpful PM me and I'll tell you a few more. :D

thankyou to everyone who posted, speech went down a treat...

cause it was my brother it was more a personal tribute and although i had queue cards i ended up ad libbing a lot. there was still room for laughs but i think purely cause everyone knows how close i am to my brother they thought what i had said was heartfelt and quite poignant.

there was even some of his mates welling up not to mention most of the women there. just a pity that none of them were single :(

great weekend though, probably best one in my life :D:D:D

I was called upon to say a few words at my Sister's wedding and they virtually had to drag me off. I was just getting onto the joke about the Bishop and the actress when they managed to wrestle the mike off me

I had a blast at my brother's wedding 2 years ago. He and his wife met and first dated 13 years before they got hitched, so for my best man's speech I had compiled a list of major historical events that took far less time to be resolved. ("there was the Hundred Years War, but in reality, that was a series of smaller skirmishes so even that one doesn't count!")
