Who thinks house music has been.....

genres come and go in never ending cycles, they never die, just fade away for a while until they become "fashionable" again.

..it's incredible when you think that house music in it's present form is not far short of 20 years old :? ...I never had an idea what was house, techno, acid...not much has changed :D

yep

hip hop and r & b are even older still so it just goes to show how things come back into vogue......and then eventually fade back out again to make way for something else.

house has become less commercial. yer average ibiza comp would have sold 750000+ in 2000 and now even the best house comps will only achieve sales of around 250000. in terms of singles, top house labels would consider 1000 - 2000 vinyl sales reasonable. a few years ago this would have been more like 7000 - 8000. ibiza aside, attendances @ clubs are much lower and many of the BIGGIE promoters no longer operate.

i'm not being negative. as long as people keep producing decent house music this situation will change. musical trends are always changing and the r&b bubble will burst. some people prefer things the way they are now - smaller clubs filled with "headz" and not randoms...

commercial or not, it's all about the music and what makes you tick.

Hate to disagree Lee but the reason the numbers are down is because it has been over commercialised and done to death.

People want something different and it's going the same way as every other nabd wagon.

The big labels, promoters and investors who were responsible for the scene becoming over commercialised have largely pulled out or gone bust and hence, house has gone temporarily back underground. People who felt it had been "done to death" and moved on obviously weren't massive house music fans in the first place. Those same people are probably now prancing around in Von Duch and slding to the latest G Unit number with a glass of Kristal in one hand and "sad ****" tatooed on the other...

Temporarily underground ?? Earth calling Zanussi.

Try finding an underground night in Ibiza these days !

It depends how you class underground. House IS relatively underground compared to 'Urban' music. How few people have to be at a night before it's classed as underground in your opinion. 100 people, 50, 10, 1. What is an underground night anyway?

this post is about house music in general. in london, new york etc there are underground & small parties going on everywhere...

ibiza is different as it's a holiday destination and a lot of peops who fall into clubs over there aren't necessarily into house music... also depends on how you define underground as circo loco @ dc10, underground on thursdays, nast dirty sexy music @ lola's etc aren't commercial in my opinion...

also, u can't define the music itself as commercial as the average person in said ibiza clubs would struggle to name you ten recently released house tracks...

anyway, going back to thread title... house is less commercial now than it was 4 years ago... you only need to look at the sales stats... the big guns (emi, bmg etc) culled the majority of their house labels & the independents (swing city/soulfuric etc) are now running the show...

And in answer to bubbles question its difficult to determine whats meant by Underground although for me it has nothing to do with numbers.

I could go to a club with 1000 + and listen to Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Brett Johnson, Elliot eastwick e.t.c. or a Judge Jules night with the same numbers and I know which one I would term underground.

Anyway , its all b*ollocks terminology anyway - I have been listening to and going out to listen to house music for 17 years and I like anything as long as its good quality music. Thats all I ever ask for.

I know I come across as full otf it when it comes to music but I just get frustrated reading the same old posts about Lola's theme and s*hit like that.

Anyway - I was going to write more but I have bored myself and as such soiled my trousers.
