What's up with the 80s remixes/remakes?

I know that pop remixes have been dancehall staples for years. I'll also admit that I bounced on the floor to the "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This" remix from a year or two ago as much as anyone. Nevertheless, do you guys feel the rampant proliferation of 1980s music remixed/remade/reworked is starting to get excessive?

The girls in the office have 4 in their daily MP3 playlist rotation: "Touch Me" by Samantha Fox, "Call on Me" which was all over the place last year, Hall & Oates' "Out of Touch" remade by someone, and one other one I'm forgetting right now. Add to that the "California Dreaming" remake by Royal Gigilos and the overplayed-in-Moscow "If You're Going to San Francisco" remix of the Mamas and Pappas tune and it's all just driving me a wee bit nuts. 8O

Not if it's good, however the tracks you named are pretty ropey.

The girls in your office are probably trying to be ironic, however it's just rather naff.

lol @ nitefly, you really dislike hed kandi don't you?

i like the music, and hed kandi dj's were at el divino last year when i was there and i had a top night. each to their own, every year theres always remixed old tunes! theres always people with simple musical preferences that accept utter shit such as "sunset strippers" par example as being quality music, good enough to go and buy, and as long as there is, record companies will always release such tripe to the masses. shame on ministry of sound

there bloody everywhere,i blame hed kandi
I also blame Benny Benassi. That sound he popularized with "Satisfaction" is in about half these remixes. Drives me nuts.

Dont think you can blame anyone really...Im a hed kandi Fan!

Think if theres a sound which is selling units and theres a demand for record companys are gonna put their eggs in that basket....after all they are there to make money!

Also just from people I know....more and more are now listening to house purely because of 80's style tunes such as (dare i say) 'Call On Me'.

I think this can only be a good thing for House music....for the first time in ages there has been a steady build of house tunes breaking through into the main stream and selling BIG (er) units....which is good news for everyone involved in the music.

Thats only my thoughts....

Well i dont care what anyone says, when i heard prydz drop call on me for the first time in ibiza the place went mental!!! what ever style of house or what type u think is' cool' EVERYONE went mad to it!! even then from the response it was sooo gona be number 1!! and as soon as anything goes top 40 or get commercial play....the trend seems to be ...brand it 'cheesy' despite most the people saying this were probably there buying the so called tunes on white labels some time before and loving them!

people are making money from them, and as long as money is being made they'll keep bringing them out, end of :D

let me get this right. you are saying that after listening to call on me that people actually go out and listen to more of the same?

I've always been a big 80's fan, so I'm the happiest when some old tunes are drop, but as Clara said, only if that tunes are good.

Yep....I can now get away with playing a good bit of upfront house as people are now more prepared to listen to it...while a year or two back anything but Dancehall or RnB in most commercial clubs would kill the dancefloor.

back then it was a relativly new tune and no one expected it to go that large

Don't get me wrong, I love 80s music. I've got tons of it. From the super cheesy pop (btw, I just remembered - I also heard a remix of Howard Jones' "What is Love") to gothic and industrial. I love the stuff. I like some of the remixes too, and I also enjoy hearing familiar songs in the nightclub and bouncing around to them. (edit: I like some Hed Kandi music too, but the way)

I guess I'm just saying that, perhaps because these remixes sell well, the practice might be getting a little out of hand.
