What's the weather like at the moment?

yes. I think the Balearics is one of the few regions currently unaffected by the outage

Everyone will just carry on with their candlelit dinners as usual!

As for the rest of Spain, really feel for those stuck where aircon's failed and there's no fresh air (airports, trains etc) and it just shows how everything needs backup - including us lot relying on phones/cards etc to carry back-up cash. If the outage is for some time then stuff in freezers will thaw and become inedible (from homes, shops to cafes, factories etc), a cost of millions and who pays up, insurers or the power companies?

Card machines were not working, couldnt order taxis or use cash machines in San An within last hour. Power was on though.

Cobbled together enough cash for drinks at Itica. TAPAS in San An were brilliant, mamaged to rise an paypal invoice for us to order food 🙌 food excellent as always.

In the airport now, Ryanair told us come back to check-in in 1 hr... Fingers crossed we get home

A super weird day. Everyone on the street not knowing what to do. People just headed to the bars early until the beers got warm. Initially I thought it must be the building, then the barrio. One or two stores had a generator. Saw people buying batteries and water. (all that advance in super AI tech, and yet nothing more reliable in an emergency than an analogue transistor radio...) Walking around desperately trying to find a cafe where I could work. Then I stopped a cop and asked "is it the whole city?" He just looked at me "The whole city, the whole country and Portugal too!!" At that point, I thought "shiiiiiit"

My missus was incommunicado as she'd gone to the beach with some mates. Couldn't reach anyone. I went to a Chinese bar thinking this might be the last hot food of the day. Had 8€ in cash. Just enough. Phone was dead. What do you do? Nowhere taking cards. So went back and put the phone radio on. Increasing hysteria on one Catalan station. All the metros and trains down! People stranded! How long can electric buses last? All the stuff you do NOT want to hear. To be fair, there was no panic that I could see. A lot of sirens but it certainly wasn't New York 1977.

Whatever the cause, whether it was Putin, Mossad, the CIA or someone forgetting to put 50 céntimos in the meter, the baddies certainly know our punto débil (weak spot) now.

Or maybe it was all just a weird dream?

All that about good old analogue radios reminds me of what would happen if something like that happens in the UK; here goes - if our nuclear submarines fail to hear the Radio 4 "Today" programme for three consecutive days then they have to assume the UK's been destroyed and fire our weapons....at someone!

Now I've no idea if that's true or a (sub)urban myth, but if everything went down so quickly, and we depend on modern technology so much - how does news get to (in this case) Spain's defences?

Don't worry. The current PM, who's name has slipped my mind, is far too much of a damp squib to have written a Letter of Last Resort that actually gives the option of launching an attack. However, Lady Jane Grey (Liz Truss) would have allowed a launch after just one day of no Radio 4.

Trust Liz would fire our weapons on ourselves!!

Back on topic, glorious 22c say here in the NW of England, and that's in a cool shady spot in my garden, Ibiza is currently 20c; however Ibiza's is average, ours here is 8-10c above the normal for a decent day in late April.

Not often we can go out at night in April with just a T-shirt on!

It seems the way to achieve maximum energy security is to be largely self-reliant, which I guess is what spared the Balearics from the blackout. It's really scary that a psychopath like Putin, Netanyahu, Trump could easily bring down the mainland grid which is interconnected across different countries. Enormous potential for blackmail too. The Portuguese were claiming unusual weather patterns played a role but sounds tenuous to me. Will be interesting to see if the eventual report is too security sensitive to be published.

Every new house/business should have independent solar panels + batteries and also a small wind turbine; and old ones like mine should be getting them fitted at as lower cost as possible via grants and subsidies - doesn't that make sense?

One thing I'm totally unsure about are those "heat pumps" and willing to be educated (having installed a top-rated gas boiler under 5 years ago I'm unlikely to change for years though). Are "heat pumps" a thing in warm countries eg Spain, but they'd be needed in winter as much as ours would?

Sure, but the Balearics run on non-renewable energy. That's what the EU wants to get away from.

Heat pumps are called "air condition" in warm countries and have been used for decades. It's exactly the same principle, except that air condition units pump the heat in the opposite direction, they heat the outside while providing cooling inside.

Inverter air condition units can provide both heating and cooling as needed.

Not a good forecast for Ibiza this week, moderate temps (around 20c) but rain (heavy?) midweek. So upside-down at the moment with the UK and near continent absolutely basking in May sunshine. I'm off to Amsterdam for the week, not a bit of rain forecast, and wondering if the water in the small lakes in the parks will be warm enough to swim in?

The UK will pay for this over the summer you can bet!!

Rain is a good forecast for Ibiza , in every way.

Temperature is not rising next 10 days in Ibiza. Not more than 20 to 23 degrees. Wonder when the beach weather starts ( 25 plus )
