i just got off the phone to a lady who's no had been passed on to me by a friend i met by chance the other week at a party. we were disscussing childcare and teaching and i told him i wanted some experience working in a school but thought it would be difficult without previous teaching experience. he told me they there was quite alot of work at his old school working with special needs kids. a post i had seen advertised in local paper but missed deadline date. he give me the number of a lady who was head of department and i phoned today and just got a meeting with her 6th sept. she said to see if i was suitable for them and visa versa. this is brill news.
on to the problem (sorry it took so long!) im planning to fly to ibiza for a week right around that time. ill def go to this meeting on the 6th but im just wondering will it look really bad if i go on my hols and i'm not able to start immediately? i can only go to ibiza between the 7th and 12th as this is when mates booked hols at work. i really want this job. should i not go to ibiza? :?

think of your career. i got 20 years work experience under my belt before i came to ibiza and look at me now. cancel your flight and get a responsible job, it'll do you a world of good.

Any prospective employer in the UK should recognise any pre-booked annual leave/holidays if they're worth working for. As (I assume) it's either the Dept. of Education or Social Services you'll be working for you shouldn't have any problems whatsoever. It's also worth bearing in mind that big organisations such as the one(s) you want to work for are well aware that some employers need up to a month's notice before quitting, so again, you shouldn't have any problems at all. :D

glad of the advice from both sides. but have to admit im keener on the second. but that might be the  on my shoulder! will take it all into consideration. :D

Mia, don't worry - go on the holiday.

Any (decent) employer will fully understand you have a holiday booked - just don't tell them where you're going (only kidding  )

At least your holiday would be soon after your start date so they should appreciate it'll be out of the way, then you can get your head down once you're back.

Go have a blowout - at least you'll have something exciting to come home to.

;)

No problem ;)

I was a bit surprised at Stephen's reply to be honest (sorry Stephen)

I'm sure 99% of people you ask would say the same.

Best of luck anyhow. I wish you well.

Totally agree. I was in a similar situation a few years ago and my prospective employer was not bothered in the least. I just made sure they were well aware from the start.

P.s I am flying out on the 11th and you would be depriving us of your company :(

Concur.

just look at it like this mia.

i put my career first and now i'm here in ibiza with a lifestyle i love. the rest of the posters on this thread spend all day whinging about work and wishing they were in ibiza for one week.

now, who's got the right idea?

Mia I've started a couple of jobs and had holidays already booked and they were fine about it, just be honest and I'm sure it won't be a problem.

Mia , I was in a similar position this time last year. I accepted a new position, THEN booked a holiday to Ibiza! Only whilst I was working my notice period (3 months!) did I inform my new place bout my holiday. They had no problems with it (as Im sure you will see too!) . why not just ask them “I have a holiday booked is it ok to start after that or will it be a problem?” If they say “well we were looking you to start right away” – then cancel holiday , if not its happy days!

Stephen – is it not possible for Mia to go on this holiday and then make a successful career then move to Ibiza???? As that is what your answers seem to suggest IMO.

Similar thing happened to me in May this year. This company needed someone for a 6 week freelancing job, offered it to me but I said I've got a weeks holiday booked 3 weeks in and they were perfectly fine and said come for 3 weeks, go on your holiday and then come back afterwards.

Its a bit harsh to tell her to cancel her flight now though. Surely Mia should take a much more relaxed wait and see approach.
I think she can possibly have the best of both worlds. Go to the interview and see what they say. If they want you to start straight away say that you have a holiday booked, going tomorrow for a week but you are willing to cancel it if they really want you to start. Im pretty sure they will tell you to go on holidays, enjoy it, and come back and start in a weeks time. If they dont say that and they want you to start straight away, then you tell them you want to think about it and you have a couple of hours to decide what you want to do.
